 The theme for the year 2019 is #EndGFM.

30th National Road Safety Week (Feb 4 – 10)

 The theme of the 30th National Road Safety Week is “Sadak Suraksha-Jeevan
Raksha”
 A motor car rally called Suraksha Yatra was flagged off as a part of an event to
launch the 30th National Road Safety Week.
 The motor rally will cover around 7250 km and will travel through those places
in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar which are historically associated with
Gandhiji. Conclusion of the rally will take place at Yangon in Myanmar on the
24th February 2019.
 The aim of the event is to generate awareness and sensitizing people about safe
road usage.

 Oil industry observed Ujjwala Utsav on February 7 to celebrate the role of the
stakeholders in making Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a resounding success.

EVENTS

Shehri Samridhi Utsav

 Shehri Samridhi Utsav, an initiative of Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs


(MoHUA) has been initiated in New Delhi, with aim to extend the reach of
Deendayal Antyodaya Mission – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-
NULM).
 This Utsav is the National Exhibition cum sale of Self Help Group products and
National Street Food Festival.
 The event will provide access of Self-Help Group (SHG) members to the other
government schemes.
Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Antyodaya Yojana (DDU-AY) is a government scheme to
provide skill training to poor in rural and urban India as per international
standards.
 Initially the scheme was launched as Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana
(SGSY) in 1999.
 SGSY was renamed as National Rural Livelihood Mission in 2011 and then
merged into DDU-AY.

Words Count Festival 2019 was held in Pune

 Second edition of World Count festival 2019 was held in Pune, Maharashtra, with
an aim to bring together speakers from several socio-political spheres and share
their insights on various issues.

Parmanu Tech 2019 was held in New Delhi

2nd ASEAN – India Youth Summit - Guwahati

 2nd ASEAN – India Youth Summit in Guwahati was conducted to strengthen


the mutual cooperation among ASEAN countries.
 The theme of the summit was ‘Connectivity : Pathway to Shared Prosperity’.
 The summit will help to lead the development of Guwahati through youth forces.
Guwahati has been becoming to be the gateway to South-East Asian countries.

Boori Boot Yollo festival

 Nyishi tribe celebrated ’52nd Boori Boot Yollo festival’ with great enthusiasm
to welcome spring and a successful harvest. It is celebrated every year in the
month of feb.
 Nyishi is the largest community in Arunachal Pradesh,found in Daporijo, Upper
Subansiri Locale and Raga and Dollungmukh ranges of Lower Subansiri Region
of Arunachal Pradesh.

2nd ASEAN Indian Youth summit – Guwahati

 Theme of the summit – ‘Connectivity – Pathway to shared prosperity’

3-day Krishi Kumbh to begins at Motihari in Bihar

 Over fifteen thousand farmers across different states and about two hundred
agricultural scientists are participating in the Kumbh. There will be 14
technical sessions during three day Krishi Kumbh.

 The objective of Krishi Kumbh is to promote modern techniques and


diversification in agriculture that could help in doubling farmer’s income.

 This Kumbh will be meeting point for policymakers, government, media,


industries and other stakeholders to share knowledge discuss problems and
presenting solutions for geometric progression growth of the agriculture in
India.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

India’s 40th Communication Satellite, GSAT-31 has been successfully launched


from French Guiana

 On 6th February 2019, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully


launched its 40th communication satellite “GSAT-31” from French Guiana by
Arianespace launch vehicle.
 It will replace the InSAT satellite.
 GSAT-31 will enlarge the Ku-band transponder capacity in geostationary orbit
 It will be beneficial for Television related up-links, connectivity, services, cellular
backhaul connectivity, etc.

ECONOMY

RBI 6th bi-monthly monetary policy

● Repo rate – 6.25%


● Reverse repo rate – 6%
● Statutory liquidity ratio – 19.25%
● Cash Reserve Ratio – 4%
● Expected GDP growth rate - 7.4 per cent in fiscal year 2019-20.

India’s export growth may diminish to 7.3% in FY19

 As per a statement released by Government, India’s export may slow down to


7.3% in 2018-19 from earlier growth rate of 9.8% of 2017-18 due to poor growth
of traditional exports like gems and jewellary, marine, farm and engineering.

Government forecasted 7.5 per cent GDP growth in FY20

 Economic Affairs Secretary, Subhash Chandra Garg said that the finance
ministry is expecting the GDP growth to reach 7.5 per cent in 2019-20 from 7.2
per cent projected for the current fiscal.
 The Government is expecting a nominal growth of 11.5 per cent (for 2019-20)
and inflation to remain at 4 per cent.

‘Darwaza Band – Part 2’ campaign

 “Darwaza Band- Part 2” campaign was launched by Swachh Bharat Mission


Grameen focuses on sustaining the open defecation free status of villages across
the country.
 The campaign launched by the Ministry of Drinking Water and
Sanitation in Mumbai in the presence of actor Amitabh Bachchan.
 The “Darwaza Band -Part 2” has been supported by World Bank.

Boeing 747-200-Air India’s first ever Flight Simulator

 Air India’s First ever Flight Simulator named ‘Boeing 747-200’ was exhibited in
Nehru Science Centre,Mumbai
 The Simulator was acquired by Air India in 1980,which is designed and
manufactured by the CAE(Canadian Aviation Electronics),Canada.
 After serving 21 years, it became obsolete, so donated to Nehru Science Centre,
with a purpose to create awareness about the significance in the field of aviation
among the public in general and students in particular.

Government notifies Rules to allow women to work in mines

 Ministry of Union Labour and Employment on 4th Feb has allowed women to
work in mines, both in opencast and underground, during the day and night, as
part of the efforts to build more opportunities for women.
 Earlier, section 46 of the Mines Act, 1952 restricts the employment of
women in underground and opencast mines.
 Women will be deployed on work between 7 pm and 6 am, if working in
any mine above ground.
 She will be deployed on work between 6 am and 7 pm, if working in any mine
below ground.
 She should be provided with adequate facilities and safeguards.
 She should be deployed in a group of not less than three in a shift.

MoU in the field of coal mining and clean coal technologies was signed
between India and Poland

 The objective of MoU includes: promoting trade and investment in the coal
sector, enhancing the understanding of coal related energy issues, clean coal
technologies.

First State Level Awareness Programme on Agriculture Export Policy

 First State Level Awareness Programme on Agriculture Export Policy to create


awareness among farmers and stakeholders was held in Pune,Maharashtra.
 The Export Policy was created by the State Governments and the Policy will be
implemented in the respective State Agriculture and horticulture departments.
 Union cabinet approved the Agriculture Export Policy 2018 with an Objective of
Doubling Farmers income by 2022.

 Mashoka5, the mobile app for booking the Bungalow No.5, inNew Delhi was
launched
 The Application will help an applicant to complete the entire booking
process from anywhere and at any time, by using a mobile phone.
 No 5 Ashoka Road bungalow is a popular wedding venue. It is maintained by the
Delhi govt

EXERCISE RAHAT

● ‘EXERCISE RAHAT’ is Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise.

● Jaipur based Sapta Shakti Command will be conducting on behalf of Indian Army

● The Joint exercise in coordination with NDMA is being conducted to synergise


efforts for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

● Representatives from Armed Forces, National Disaster Management Response


Mechanism (NDMRM), SDMA Rajasthan will be participating in the exercise.

World heritage centre to be set up at Mayapur in West Bengal

 International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has decided to set up a


“World Heritage Centre” housing “spiritual camps” of 45 countries, at its
headquarter, Mayapur in Nadia district of West Bengal.
 The camp of each country would reflect its culture, dress, lifestyle, food and
ambiance.
The estimated cost of this project is 3000 crores.

Zero Fatality Corridor

 Delhi Government launched ‘Zero Fatality Corridor’ project under its annual
road safety action plan to reduce the number of road accidents on the outer ring
road stretch between Burari and Bhalaswa Chowk.
 This project is aimed at reducing deaths to near zero level on the Outer ring road
stretch.

Indian Coast Guard and AAI signed MoU for maritime search and rescue
Operations in Port Blair

 Indian Coast Guard(ICG) and Airport Authority of India (AAI) signed a MoU
with an objective to coordinate the aeronautical and maritime Search And
Rescue(SAR) operations in congruence with the International Aeronautical
Maritime Search And Rescue(IAMSAR) standards.
 The MoU enhances Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC),Kolkata and Maritime
Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC),Port Blair and AAI’s mutual interactions,
interoperability and validating procedures on the occasion of SAR
operations.

Jammu and Kashmir government grants Divisional Status to Ladakh region

 Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik granted Ladakh a divisional
status, thus creating three administrative units of Jammu, Kashmir and
Ladakhin the State.

 The J&K government has approved the creation of a separate administrative


and revenue division for Ladakh. It will comprise Leh and Kargil districts, with
headquarters at Leh

 Earlier, Ladakh was a part of the Kashmir division

SBI UK chief conferred with “Freedom of the City of London”

● State Bank of India’s Uk chief Shri Sanjiv Chadha has been honoured with
the ‘Freedom of the City Of London’ by city of London Corporation.
● The award recognized his contribution in promoting the bilateral relations.
● Pt.Jawaharlal Nehru was the previous Indian recipient of this award and
other recipient includes author JK Rowling and actor Dame Judi Dench.

France’s highest civilian honour

 Father Francois Laborde, a 92-year-old priest, was conferred with the Legion
d’Honneur, the highest civilian award of France, in recognition of his work for
specially-abled children in Howrah.
 Father Francois Laborde,French-origin with indian citizenship,is considered to be
the third person from the state to be entitled with the Legion of Honor after film
maestro Satyajit Ray and actor Soumitra Chatterjee.

INTERNATIONAL

Second Trump and Kim summit to be held in Vietnam on Feb 27-28

● US President Donald Trump announced that he will hold the second summit with
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam on February 27th and 28th.
● Trump said that progress has been made in his efforts to achieve peace on the
Korean peninsula. He, however, said that much work remains to be done in an
effort to dismantle North Korean nuclear and missile programmes.
● Kim and Trump met in Singapore last year, marking the first bilateral meeting
between the leaders of the two countries.
● The leaders had signed a vaguely-worded agreement pledging to work toward
full denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
● North Korea has since then refrained from overtly provocative actions like
testing nuclear warheads or ballistic missiles. However, it has yet to agree to
actually give up any piece of its atomic arsenal.

Siamese Fighting Fish

 Thailand named the tiny,eye-catching ,colourful fin plumaged Siamese fighting


fish as its aquatic animal with a aim to boost the conservation and breeding of
the same.
 Siamese fighting fish is the native of Mekong basin of Thailand and is mostly
found in the Chao Phraya river in Thailand.
 The Siamese fighting fish was registered as intangible cultural heritage in
2013.

Macedonia to join NATO

 Macedonia signed an accord, to become the 30th member of the NATO military
alliance.
 The historic agreement was signed between Macedonia’s Foreign Minister
Nikola Dimitrov and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

India inked MoU with Bangladesh to train its 1800 civil servants

 India and Bangladesh have signed an MOU for training 1800 Bangladesh Civil
Servants for the tenure of 6 years.
 Under the first MOU signed in 2015,1500 Bangladesh Civil Servants have already
been trained in NCGG (National Centre for Good Governance)

‘Indian Ocean Rim Association’ meeting on Disaster Risk management

 Indian Ocean Rim Association meet was organised in New Delhi in


 IORA has set Disaster Risk Management its priority to enhance resilience in IORA
countries according to its ‘2017-2021’ Action plan.
 This meet will manifest establishment of a DRM (Disaster risk management) Core
Group to take ahead the objective of the work plan.
 There are 21 member countries in IORA
 21 IORA Countries also adopted the Delhi Declaration on Renewable Energy
on October 4, 2018

ENVIRONMENT

2018 was the fourth-hottest year on record,

 NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric


Administration(NOAA) released their report on analysis of global climatic
change for the year 2018 ,and remarked 2018 as the fourth hottest year.
 It is predicated that there is a rise of 5-9 degree celsius temperature in this
century.

India to host 13th Conference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on the


conservation of migratory species of wild animals (CMS)

 The 13thConference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on the conservation of


migratory species of wild animals (CMS) is going to be hosted by India during
15th to 22nd February, 2020 at Gandhinagar in Gujarat.
 CMS an environmental treaty under the aegis of United Nations Environment
Programme
 India has been a Party to the CMS since 1983. The Conference of Parties (COP) is
the decision-making organ of this convention

Biodiversity Taggist system launched in Goa

 It aims to ensure communities residing within the biodiversity zone to get Access
benefit Share (ABS) from their profits
 The tag will show that the ingredients used in a particular produce are sourced
from the nature and the location of it
 The Sellers are supposed to pay 0.01% of their annual profit to the Goa State
Biodiversity Board
 The board will then use this amount to protect the habitat from where the
ingredients came

RANKING / INDEX

7th International IP Index

 US Chambers of Commerce released the annual International IP Index of top 50


economies in the world.
 As per the ranking, India climbed 8 positions to 36th rank in comparison to last
year’s 44th rank.
 The index has been topped by US, followed by UK, Sweden, France and Germany,
while Venezuela stood at last rank.

India becomes World’s Second Largest Consumer and importer of LPG

 India has become the second largest importer of liquefied petroleum


gas (LPG) after China,due to rising demands of cleaner alternatives to the
traditional cooking fuels like firewood and cow dung.
 The demand of LPG is expected to rise 34% from 2014 to 2025.
 In India, LPG is mainly imported from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates,
Kuwait and Iran.

5-Member Committee to Promote Dairy Farming

 Punjab government headed by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh


decided to constitute a 5 members high-powered committee to prepare a
comprehensive action plan for boosting the dairy sector with the aim of
supplementing the income of farmers in a result-oriented manner.
 The role of the committee will be to recommend measures for promoting
diversification of agriculture with the aim of enhancing farmers’ income from
allied sources.

 TN Govt released new solar energy policy 2019


 It aims at generating 9,000 MW for the state by 2022

J Farm services included in Uzhavan app

 TN launched a new service in Uzhavan app to enable farmers get equipment


meant for agricultural operations at reasonable rent

 TAFE will rent out the tractors and modern farm equipment to farmers who
register through the app

102 Service in Tamil Nadu

 15 new ambulances added to the 102 service recently


 102 toll free number- will be used to provide pick and drop services for women
and new-born children
 This project was launched in 2013

Chennai Police Commissioner launches mobile app Digicop

 Chennai Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan and actor Vijay Sethupathi have
launched the mobile app “DigiCop”, of Chennai’s police department.
 This app as of now have details of 18,000 stolen mobile phones are stored.
 Using this app,user can lodge mobile theft complaints and also check if the user’s
mobile is in the police list of retrieved mobiles.Moreover if someone is buying a
phone from a second-hand shop they can verify if the phone is stolen or genuine.
 Using this app,Users can also follow,if their stolen two-wheeler had been traced
by the police.
