LIFE CYCLE OF ADIDAS FUTURECRAFT SHOES
Futurecraft Loop are 100% recyclable sneak-
ers unlike other performance running shoes, a
feat the company achieved by making all the
components from a single plastic material.
RAW MATERIAL ACQUISITION
Generally all sports shoes are made up of
polyester. Adidas started working with Parley,
an organization whose goal is to reduce the
ocean’s plastic waste. Last year, they came
up with the 3-D printed prototype of a shoe
that would be made almost entirely out of re-
cycled plastic waste.
Ocean Plastic
The plastic is collected near the Maldives and
used in the construction of almost an entire
shoe. The upper features 95 percent of ocean
plastic and 5 percent of recycled polyester.

PROCESSING & FORMULATION
• The plastic waste from oceans & beaches is
sorted & sent to Adidas processing plant in
Maldives. It uses the body of plastic bottles
that has Polythylene terepthalate, caps are
sent to normal recycling facilities.
• The processing plant crushes, washes &
dehydrates the waste to form small plas-
tic flakes. The flakes are heated, dried &
cooled & then cut into small resin pallets.
• Normally polyester is made from petroleum.
But Adidas melts these pallets to create a
Filament, which is spun into what is known as
“Ocean Plastic” a form of polyester yarn.
• This Ocean Plastic is used to form shoes &
Jerseies. They still meet the performance &
comfort standard of the company.
• Recycled Polyester uses 20% less water &
fewer chemicals & prevents plastic pollution.
