emphasize that something happened before something else or earlier than
expected.

YET used with the present perfect means 'at any time up to now'. We use it to
emphasize that we expect something to happen soon. Yet (in this context) is only
used in negative sentences and questions.

We use the present perfect simple with action verbs to emphasize the
completion of an event in the recent past.

We use the present perfect continuous to talk about ongoing events or activities
which started at a time in the past and are still continuing up until now.

Choose the present perfect simple or present perfect continuous to complete the
sentences below. If both tenses are possible, use the present perfect continuous.

1) I have been cycling (cycle) and my legs are really tired now.

2) I'm sorry I'm late, _________________(wait) for a long time?

3) How long _________________ (know) Peter?

4) Somebody has been eating __ (eat) my cookies. There are none left.

5) Somebody has been eating (eat) my cookies. There are very few left.
6) How many books have you read (read)?

USED TO is a unique expression in English. Its form and function are similar to
a modal (i.e., it gives extra information about the verb and is followed by a base
verb).

Used to shows that an action was performed repeatedly in the past, but is no
longer performed in the present.

Complete the following sentences about how things used to be 50 years ago. Fill
in the gaps with the correct form of used to and the words in brackets.

1) Not too many people used to live (live) in the cities.

2) Salaries used to be much lower.

3) People _did not use to buy (not buy) so much stuff.

4) _____Did ____ he ___use to exercise _________ (exercise) when you

were younger?

5) People _____didnt use to get ________ (not get) divorced.

6) People _did not use to eat ___ (not eat) so much processed food; their diet
was healthier.

7) People ____used to have _________ (have) more children and at a younger

age.

8) People ___did not use to travel _____ (not travel) so often, or they just
didn't travel at all.

We can use the PAST PERFECT to show the order of two past events. The past
perfect shows the earlier action and the past simple shows the later action.
It doesn't matter in which order we say the two events.

Put the verbs into the correct form (past perfect simple or simple past).

EXAMPLE:

1. The storm (destroy) destroyed the sandcastle that we (build) had built.

2. He (not / be) had not were to Cape Town before 1997.

3. When she (go out) __went out ______ to play, she (do / already) had
already done her homework.

5. The doctor (take) took off the plaster that he (put on) had put on six weeks
before.

6. The waiter brought a drink that I (not / order) hadn't ordered

7. I could not remember the poem we (learn) had learned the week before.

8. The children (collect)collected the chestnuts that (fall) fell from the tree.

THE DEFINITE ARTICLE IS THE WORD "THE." It is used before a noun to

define it as something specific (e.g., something previously mentioned or known,

something unique, or something being identified by the speaker).

In English grammar, the term ZERO ARTICLE refers to an occasion in speech or

writing where a noun or noun phrase is not preceded by an article (a, an, or the)

Definite article (the) or zero article (X)

Read the sentences and decide whether the correct article is definite or zero.

EXAMPLE:
1. Did you get married after leaving the university?

2. I was at the train station when you called me.

3. I left work at six o'clock pm.

What's an indirect question?

Indirect questions are a more polite way to ask for information or make requests.
We often use them when asking strangers or people we do not know well, including
coworkers. We also use them when asking for favors from friends or when we want
to avoid sounding demanding.

Indirect questions exercises.

Transform the following direct questions into indirect questions in English.

Remember about the right order of the words in the indirect question.

EXAMPLE:

Tell me what her name is, please
