message, rather than passively hearing the words that a speaker says. Active
listening is a skill that can be acquired and developed with practice. However,
active listening can be difficult to master and will, therefore, take time and
patience to develop.

Active Listeners provide verbal and nonverbal feedback to show their

sincere investment in what the speaker is sharing.

Tips for Active Listening

1. Face the speaker and have eye contact

2. “Listen” to non-verbal cues too
3. Don‟t interrupt
4. Listen without judging, or jumping to conclusions
5. Don‟t start planning what to say next
6. Show that you‟re listening
7. Ask relevant questions
8. Paraphrase and summarize

Furthermore, active listening is very important as it can help to build trust

within a conversation, thereby allowing the speaker to communicate more easily,
openly and honestly.

c. Listening Activities

Activity 1: Tell Me Something about Yourself That Might Surprise Me

The teacher will group the class into two, and each group will select a
representative to tell something about their selves that will surprise the class. The
class should listen attentively to the speaker because they will be asked to
narrate what the speaker has said.

IV. Evaluation

On a 1/2 sheet of paper, explain why is being listened to powerful for us

personally? And what are some things we can do to make others feel like we‟re
really listening to them?

V. Assignment

In a group of three (3), make a 5 minutes role play portraying the power of
active listening.
