1. Explain the concept of disaster. (5 points)

A disaster is a sudden, calamitous event that seriously disrupts the functioning of a

community or society and causes human, material, and economic or environmental losses
that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources. Through
often caused by nature, disasters can have human origins. A disaster occurs when a hazard
impacts on vulnerable people. The combination of hazards, vulnerability and inability to
reduce the potential negative consequences of risk results in disaster. A disaster happens
when a hazard impacts on the vulnerable population and causes damage, casualties and
disruption

2. Differentiate predicted calamities from unpredicted calamities. Give at least 2 examples

each. (10 points)

Predicted calamities- a prediction is what someone thinks will happen. A prediction is a

forecast, but not only about the weather. Pre means “before” and diction has to do with
talking. This is how you know what will happen using the various technologies invented by
scientists using this different technologies it helps us to be being prepared in every
calamities and to help us reduce loss in life. However Unpredicted calamities these are the
disaster that will happen that we don’t know. Here in unpredicted calamities we do not
become prepared because there is no warning or announcement and the damage to us is
great.

Examples of predicted calamities: Typhoon and Flood

Examples of unpredicted calamities: Tornado and Earthquake
3. Discuss the relationship between disaster, hazard, vulnerability and capacity. (10 points)

The relationship between these four components, indicate that each of the three variables that
define risk- the hazard, the elements exposed and their vulnerability- are equal value. Reducing any
one or more of the three contributing variables will lessen the risk to a community. In reality,
however, there is little opportunity to reduce the hazard component, therefore only the
vulnerability and the elements at risk will vary. When hazard and vulnerability are high, it will
cause disaster but when capacity is present, it will decrease the impact. Hence, to reduce the risk of
a disaster.
