1. What is the Internet? Who uses it and why?
2. What is a Web browser? Provide two examples.
3. Identify and briefly describe the applications associated with the Internet and the Web.
4. Differentiate Internet, Intranets and Extranets.
This question can be partially answered by looking at each of the words' prefixes; inter
means between, intra means within, and extra means outside or beyond.
Essentially, the Internet is open to the entire world, whereas an intranet is a private space,
usually within a business. An extranet is essentially a combination of both the Internet and an
intranet. An extranet is like an intranet that allows access only to certain outside individuals
or businesses.
Thus, here is the list of the differences between the three:
In terms of accessibility of network, internet is public, intranet is private, while
extranet is private.
For the availability, internet is into the global system, intranet is specific to an
organization, while extranet is to share information with suppliers and vendors it makes
the use of public network.
In the coverage, internet is for all over the world, intranet is restricted area up to an
organization, while the extranet is restricted area up to an organization and some of its
stakeholders or so.
While in the accessibility of content; internet is accessible to everyone connected.
Intranet is accessible only to the members of organization. Extranet is accessible only to
the members of organization and external members with logins.
In the No. of computers connected: internet is largest in number of connected devices.
Intranet has the minimal number of devices are connected. Extranet has connected
devices are comparable with Intranet
For the owner, internet has no owner, Intranet is exclusive on a single organization.
Extranet is exclusive on a single / multiple organization.

Thus, in the purpose of the network; Internets’ purpose is to share information

throughout the world. Intranets’purpose is to share information throughout the
organization. Extranets’ purpose is to share information between members and external,
members.

In the Security, Internet is dependent on the user of the device connected to network.
Intranet is enforced via firewall. Extranet is enforced via firewall that separates internet
and extranet.
Hence for users, Internet is the general public. Intranet is employees of the
organization. Extranet is the employees of the organization which are connected.
For the Policies behind setup; internet has no hard and fast rule for policies.
Intranets’ policies of the organization are imposed. Extranets’ policies of the organization
are imposed.
In terms of maintenance, Internet is maintained by ISP. Intranet is maintained by
CIO. HR or communication department of an organization. Extranet is maintained by
CIO. HR or communication department of an organization.
Thus, in terms of Economical; Internet is more economical to use. Intranet is less
economical. Extranet is also less economical.
For the relation: Internet is the network of networks. Intranet is derived from Internet.
Extranet is derived from Intranet. For example, Internet is what we are normally using is
internet. For intranet WIPRO using internal network for its business operations. For
extranet, DELL and Intel using network for its business operations.
