IDENTIFICATION OF DIFFERENT BREEDS OF POULTRY, ITS CLASSES AND ORIGIN

Activity Title:

I. Introduction

Chickens are grown for their egg and meat. Likewise they are classified as egg-type chicken
and meat-types chickens. Egg type chickens are composed of stock that has been developed
for egg production and are maintained for the principal purpose of producing chicks for the
ultimate production of eggs for human consumption. Breeds of meat type chickens primarily
include broilers, fryers, roasters, and other meat type chickens. Here broilers and other
chickens are raised for their meat.

Group of breeds developed in a particular geographical area. The breeds of chicken are
classified into four classes, viz., American class English class, Mediterranean class and Asiatic
class.

A group of birds which are similar in shape, size and body conformation, decendants of
common ancestry is known as breed. All the birds of a breed have more or less same genetic
makeup with common morphological and physiological setup. The examples of some breeds
of chicken are white leghorn, rode island red, new hampshire, australorp, sussex, aseel, etc.

But based on our poultry here in our area, White Leghorn is the most popular breed of
chicken in which White Leghorns are known for not exhibiting the maternal behaviour of egg
incubation, often known as broodiness. White Leghorn hens can lay up to 300 medium white
eggs per year. Because of this white Leghorns have been used to create highly productive
egg-laying hybrids for commercial agriculture.

II. Objectives

To identify common breeds of poultry in the locality

To determine the characteristic of different breeds of poultry

To distinguish its class and origin

III. Materials

Camera/smart phone

Ballpen

Paper

Based on what I've observe from the poultry here in our area, their chicken coop is not very
spacious, both the front and back of their house have only a small space of their chicken
coop. So the manager here also has a small salary, at 500 pesos a month. But based on my
observation, maybe their chickens also lay very few eggs, so the owner's income is also low.
It is also the only chicken they have and there is no other kind mixed with their chicken. You
can also see the food they feed and there are even medicines for their chickens. I came to
think that when their poultry area is large, their income will definitely be higher because this
type of chicken (White Leghorn) has a lot to lay eggs. It's also most of the poultry I’ve seen in

our area. Other native chicken breeds are from the backyard. Which are the Naked Neck,
Paraokan, Swedish Orust and Booted Bantam.

V. Conclusion

In having a chicken coop you must be prepared. Plan how big the chicken will be. Because of
its construction many will be required. The expense, how many chickens you have, breeds
that are good to use in poultry and so on. If you are not ready especially how much and
quantity you want and I mean if you want to grow the income you should better prepare the
expenses first. It's true that it's not bad if you just started small but if you haven't planned
about it, it should be accepted if you earn little because it's not a plan. The chicken is also big
because of its eggs and meat. If there are many eggs, many will be sold as well as its meat. It
is better plan for long than to rush on it.

V. Recommendation

In planning the drying of the poultry should prepare oneself for it. Because the income of the
poultry is large once it is accumulated even for a long time. after all, building a business is not in
a hurry if you want to grow. It is better to stock up well first so that having a chicken coop will
not be difficult if the income is low due to the small space you have. Just as with other animals,
let us compare the chicken to other animals that sell and make a good living, kinds of animals
like their breed. Good breed good production.
