competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be

LESSON
Electronic Test Equipment
The electronic systems work on either continuous-time (CT) signals or
discrete-time (DT) signals. A continuous-time system is one in which the response
signals are defined along a continuum of time, such as an analogue signal which
“continues” over time creating a continuous-time signal. On the other hand, a
discrete-time system is one in which the input signals are not continuous but a
series of signal values defined in “discrete” points of time. This results in a discrete-
time output generally characterized as a sequence of values or numbers.

The electronic test equipment is testing equipment utilized to identify faults

in the process of electronic devices by producing stimulus signals and obtain
responses from electronic devices under test. If any faults are found, then known
faults can be tracked a rectified utilizing electronic testing equipment. Most often
all electrical and electronic circuits are examined and troubleshooted to identify
faults or irregular functioning.

Types of Electronic Testing Equipments

A. The following test equipment are basic tools used in evaluating electronic
component:

1. Voltmeter- is basic equipment or instrument used to quantify the difference of

voltage or electrical potential between two points in electrical circuits. It has two
kinds; the analog and digital.
• Analog Voltmeter- moves a indicator across a scale in relative to the voltage
of the electrical circuit.

• Digital Voltmeter- by using a converter, it assesses an unidentified input

voltage by translating the voltage to a digital value and then displays the
voltage in numeric form.

2. Ohmmeter- quantifies small amount of resistance called micro-ohmmeters.

Resistance values are measured in ohms (Ω). Originally, ohmmeter is made with a
small battery to give a voltage to a resistance.

3. Ammeter - measure the electric current in a circuit is known as an ammeter.

The units of measurement for electric current is amperes (A).

4. Multimeter- It is an equipment that can measure the three important basic

electrical features: voltage, current and resistance that can perform like voltmeter,
ohmmeter, and ammeter. It can also be used for household wiring, electric motors,
testing batteries and power supplies and used to examining the stability between
two points in an electrical circuit. It has three types that are available in the
market; analog multimeter, digital multimeter and fluke multimeter.

Analog Multimeter Digital Multimeter fluke Multimeter

B. The following equipment used in testing stimulus signals of the circuit

under test:
1. Power Supplies- is an electronic device that provides electric energy to an
electric load. The main purpose of a power supply is to transform one form
of electrical energy into another. Regulated power supplies refers to a power
supply which delivers a range of output voltages used for bench testing of
electronic circuits with some preset voltages.

2. Signal Generator - is an electronic device used for producing electronic

signals either in the analog or digital fields (repeating or non-repeating
signals). It is used in checking, designing and refurbishing electronic devices.

3. Pulse Generator- is used to produce electrical pulses in different shapes:

mostly used for tests at analog or electrical point. It is used to regulate the
width, frequency, delay based on the low and high voltage levels of the
pulses and with respect to an internal and external triggering.
4. Digital Pattern Generator - is an electronic testing equipment or software
used to create digital electronics stimuli at logical level. Digital electronics
stimuli are a particular type of electrical waveform ranging between two
standard voltages parallel to two logic gates (either 1 or 0, low or high). The
main task of the digital pattern generator is to trigger the inputs of a
electronic device. It is also generates a single shot or monotonous signals in
which some sort of activating source takes place ( internally or externally).

C. The following equipment used to analyze the response of the circuit under
test:
1. Oscilloscope – is used to monitor the changes of an electrical signal
based on time such that voltage and time represent a shape of the
signals and graphed continuously matched with a standardized scale. It
is also used for transforming non electrical signals such as vibration or
sound into voltages and then shows the result.

2. Frequency counter- is an electrical test equipment used for quantifying

the frequency of repetitive signals and elapsed time between events. It is
also utilized to gauge the radio frequency where it is essential to calculate
the accurate frequency of a certain signal. It is commonly used as general
purpose test center equipment to assess higher frequencies.
D. Advanced or Less Commonly used Testing Equipment
1. LCR Meter- is used to calculate the inductance, capacitance and resistance
of electronics components. The inductance, capacitance and resistance are
signified by the letters L, C, and R so it is named as LCR Meter.
