Module Operation’s Management.

Code& Title
Course Operations management is about the way organizations produce goods and

services, and in particular the activities that are directly concerned with making

and delivering these products. It is true that the activities in all other areas of

business organizations are all interrelated with Operation’s management. The

reality is that production/operation management is all about management,

managers (workers) need to possess the knowledge & skills in the content areas

in operations.

The course is structured around the broad areas of the “5ps” of operation’s

management:

Product, Process, Plant, Programme & People. This will provide the context

for looking at the roles & responsibilities of Operations Manager.

Module Aims The aim of this module is to enable students to appreciate how organizations

effectively manage facilities, assets and resources for the efficient delivery of

consistent quality goods and services.


Rationale Organizations will take a variety of inputs (materials, money and human

resource), perform operations (such as manufacturing and service provision)

which in turn will give outputs (the finished goods and services).

In practice the business processes by which this is achieved can become very

complex.

Learning On successful completion of this module, students will be able :

 To appreciate the context of the operation manager’s role and how it

 Describe the key production processes for a business model and use this

as the basis for building an operations plan for the organization

identifying key resource requirements and capacity.

 Discuss the importance of efficient supply chain management and be

able to document a basic supply chain.

 Understand the principles of quality management and customer

relationship management.

Teaching The delivery of the module will involve a blend of lectures, tutorials,

presentations and guided case study sessions as indicated in the teaching hours

Assessment This will comprise an assignment and a case study both carrying 50% each, and,

a 3 hour written examination carrying 50% of the marks.


Structure

Assessment Assignments are designed to assess a student’s research and analytical ability,

grasp and application of theory and ability to advance possible solutions to real

encourage the professional development of a student.
