The Concept Paper 3
The Concept Paper 3
The covid-19 began in Wuhan, China. Corona virus was described first as an
epidemic (Anderson et al.,2020, Albzeirat et al., 2020) later on it becomes pandemic which
give a big change to the lives of every living around the world as well as in the system of
education.
The result of this research displays what are the impact of covid-19 to self-
supporting college students. Some students, specially working students have been affected
due to the new normal educational system in terms of financial problem. I, as a researcher
wanted to know the problems experienced by the self-supporting college students,
primarily in Initao College learners.
Research Objectives
This study will use a qualitative survey method to come up with an exhaustive
inquiry. The chosen respondents will be 15 self-supporting college students from Initao
College. In collecting data, I will make a questionnaire as an interview guide. The
questionnaire will be designed for college students who ages 18 above from 1 st year to 4th
year.
Literature Review
Toward the end of February, as alert sounded on the increasing spread of the covid-
19 infection, the World Bank built up a multi-sectoral worldwide task force team to help
nation reaction and adapting measures. At that point, just China and some other influenced
nations were upholding social distance through the closure of schools. In the meantime,
following fourteen days after the fact, 120 countries have closed schools impacting almost a
billion students across the world that have experience closure of their schools for the
period (AzziHuck and Shmis 2020). In this light, the covid-19 pandemic has forced the
universities to close face-to-face education and send student’s home. Through this, it forces
the universities to introduce courses through online portals. Also, education industries are
adapting the technologies available such as digital video conferencing platforms like Zoom,
Microsoft platform, and Webex Blackboard and Google Classroom (Larry 2020). Therefore,
this will be enhancing E-learning globally (Chen 2010; Yen et al.2011; Larry 2020).
Modular learning and e-learning tools have played a crucial role during this
pandemic, helping schools and universities facilitate student learning during the closure of
universities and schools (Subedi et al., 2020). While adapting to the new changes, staff and
student readiness needs to be gauged and supported accordingly. The learners with a fixed
mindset find it difficult to adapt and adjust, whereas the learners with a growth mindset
quickly adapt to a new learning environment.
As schools have been closed to cope with the global pandemic, students, parents and
educators around the globe have felt the unexpected ripple effect of the covid-19 pandemic.
While governments, frontline workers and health officials are doing their best slowing
down the outbreak, education systems are trying to continue imparting quality education
for all during these difficult times. Many students at home/living space have undergone
psychological and emotional distress and have been unable to engage productively.
The use of suitable and relevant pedagogy for online education may depend on the
expertise and exposure to information and communications technology (ICT) for both
educators and the learners. Some of the online platforms used so far include unified
communication and collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom,
Canvas and Blackboard, which allow the teachers to create educational courses, training
and skill development programs (Petrie, 2020). They include options of workplace chat,
video meeting and file storage that keep classes organized and easy to work. They usually
support the sharing of a variety of content like Word, PDF, Excel file, audio, videos and
many more. These also allow the tracking of student learning and assessment by using
quizzes and the rubric-based assessment of submitted assignments.
Proposed Methodology
This study will focus on the impact of covid-19 pandemic to self-supporting college
learners. It aims to determine the participant’s profile in terms of age, gender, and year
level, monthly income, mode of delivery of college education during the covid-19 pandemic,
and is the impact of covid-19 pandemic to the self-supporting college learners.
The locale of this study is in Initao College, which is located in Zone 2-A Jampason,
Initao, Misamis Oriental. Initao College (IC) is a public college in Misamis Oriental. It was
established in 2003 to provide residents of the municipality access to higher education
preparing students with the competencies necessary in both the local and global industries.
As of 2018, ICians as we students are called, has been taking up our courses for free, as
Initao College is covered by the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.
This study will use a qualitative survey method. The design is appropriate for the
study as it involves gathering of data to get information that aims to reveal opinions and
experiences to the existing phenomena. Data will be collected from the questionnaire and
interview of the participants or respondents of this study.
The participants of this study will be the chosen self-supporting college students
from Initao College. They will be given questionnaires to answer and will be interviewed as
well to gather the needed data for the study.
In gathering data, I as a researcher will identify first the research problem and the
participants of my study. The questionnaires will then be distributed to the identified
participants, following of course the health standard protocols required by the Inter
Agency Task Force (IATF). Interview followed for more information needed. The gathered
data will be then tallied, analyzed and presented for a clear understanding and as deemed
necessary. Conclusions and recommendations will be drawn based on the findings.
