THE CONCEPT PAPER

THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC TO SELF-SUPPORTING COLLEGE LEARNERS

The covid-19 began in Wuhan, China. Corona virus was described first as an
epidemic (Anderson et al.,2020, Albzeirat et al., 2020) later on it becomes pandemic which
give a big change to the lives of every living around the world as well as in the system of
education.

The monetary problem of education fee during covid-19 pandemic is increasing.

Due to the rising price of education finances while facing this covid-19 pandemic, families
incline to face financial crises specially on budgeting in the basic needs of the family. As
well as it has a big impact to students on the crises experienced by their family, students
needed to work either part time or full-timework while studying.

According to Peter R. Orszag, and Diane M. Whitmore entitled “Learning and

earning: working in college” assert that since 1984, the fraction of college students aged 16
to 24 who also work full or part-time has enlarged from 49 to 57 percent. According to Nor
AishaBuang, NoorazmanHasan (2011) part-time jobs affect student’s academic
performance.

The number of cases of covid-19 increased and several problems experienced by

those students has risen. As the main purpose of this study, this paper aims to determine
the impact of covid-19 pandemic to those self-supporting students.

The result of this research displays what are the impact of covid-19 to self-
supporting college students. Some students, specially working students have been affected
due to the new normal educational system in terms of financial problem. I, as a researcher
wanted to know the problems experienced by the self-supporting college students,
primarily in Initao College learners.

Research Objectives

This study will be focused on the impact of covid-19 pandemic to self-supporting

college learners of Initao College. It aims to answer the following questions: What is the
profile of the self-supporting college learners in terms of: a. age b. gender c. year level?
What is the mode of delivery of college education during the covid-19 pandemic? How
much is the monthly allowance of the self-supporting college during the pandemic? What is
the workload of self-supporting college learners during the covid-19 pandemic? What is the
impact of covid-19 pandemic to the self-supporting college learners?

This study will use a qualitative survey method to come up with an exhaustive
inquiry. The chosen respondents will be 15 self-supporting college students from Initao
College. In collecting data, I will make a questionnaire as an interview guide. The
questionnaire will be designed for college students who ages 18 above from 1 st year to 4th
year.

Significance of the Study

As a researcher, I believe that this study is indeed a great significance to the

learners, teachers, parents, school administrators and for the future researcher as well. For
the learners, this research will reminiscent of what they are doing to finish their degree, in
making them strong as well, this will help also guide them on what to do during this
pandemic so that financial problem will be avoided. Teachers as well, will be able to get
information about the impact of this pandemic towards their self-supporting student’s thus
proper advice, motivation and support will be provided to them. Parents will be informed
on the impact of covid-19 to their children who are self-supporting college learners thus
enough support and guidance will be provided especially in terms of financial. School
administrators will also guide them on what help they can provide to self-supporting
college learners especially in giving advice, motivation and including the student’s financial
assistance program of the government to those deserving students. Lastly is for the future
researcher, the outcome of this study is beneficial to the researchers in coming up related
studies in the future.

Literature Review

According to (Dr. Linda Garcia), in mid-March, community colleges across the

country transitioned from predominantly face-to-face classes to online instruction
practically overnight as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Colleges faced the daunting
task of making rapid decisions about operations and instruction with little data or common
reference points. Faculty had never previously taught an online environment, although
many instructors had never previously taught an online course. And students struggled
with challenges associated with adapting to the view e-online environment. To make
matters more difficult, many of them did not have access to a dependable computer and/or
adequate and reliable internet.

Toward the end of February, as alert sounded on the increasing spread of the covid-
19 infection, the World Bank built up a multi-sectoral worldwide task force team to help
nation reaction and adapting measures. At that point, just China and some other influenced
nations were upholding social distance through the closure of schools. In the meantime,
following fourteen days after the fact, 120 countries have closed schools impacting almost a
billion students across the world that have experience closure of their schools for the
period (AzziHuck and Shmis 2020). In this light, the covid-19 pandemic has forced the
universities to close face-to-face education and send student’s home. Through this, it forces
the universities to introduce courses through online portals. Also, education industries are
adapting the technologies available such as digital video conferencing platforms like Zoom,
Microsoft platform, and Webex Blackboard and Google Classroom (Larry 2020). Therefore,
this will be enhancing E-learning globally (Chen 2010; Yen et al.2011; Larry 2020).

Modular learning and e-learning tools have played a crucial role during this
pandemic, helping schools and universities facilitate student learning during the closure of
universities and schools (Subedi et al., 2020). While adapting to the new changes, staff and
student readiness needs to be gauged and supported accordingly. The learners with a fixed
mindset find it difficult to adapt and adjust, whereas the learners with a growth mindset
quickly adapt to a new learning environment.

As schools have been closed to cope with the global pandemic, students, parents and
educators around the globe have felt the unexpected ripple effect of the covid-19 pandemic.
While governments, frontline workers and health officials are doing their best slowing
down the outbreak, education systems are trying to continue imparting quality education
for all during these difficult times. Many students at home/living space have undergone
psychological and emotional distress and have been unable to engage productively.

The use of suitable and relevant pedagogy for online education may depend on the
expertise and exposure to information and communications technology (ICT) for both
educators and the learners. Some of the online platforms used so far include unified
communication and collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom,
Canvas and Blackboard, which allow the teachers to create educational courses, training
and skill development programs (Petrie, 2020). They include options of workplace chat,
video meeting and file storage that keep classes organized and easy to work. They usually
support the sharing of a variety of content like Word, PDF, Excel file, audio, videos and
many more. These also allow the tracking of student learning and assessment by using
quizzes and the rubric-based assessment of submitted assignments.

Proposed Methodology

This study will focus on the impact of covid-19 pandemic to self-supporting college
learners. It aims to determine the participant’s profile in terms of age, gender, and year
level, monthly income, mode of delivery of college education during the covid-19 pandemic,
and is the impact of covid-19 pandemic to the self-supporting college learners.

The locale of this study is in Initao College, which is located in Zone 2-A Jampason,
Initao, Misamis Oriental. Initao College (IC) is a public college in Misamis Oriental. It was
established in 2003 to provide residents of the municipality access to higher education
preparing students with the competencies necessary in both the local and global industries.
As of 2018, ICians as we students are called, has been taking up our courses for free, as
Initao College is covered by the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.

This study will use a qualitative survey method. The design is appropriate for the
study as it involves gathering of data to get information that aims to reveal opinions and
experiences to the existing phenomena. Data will be collected from the questionnaire and
interview of the participants or respondents of this study.

The participants of this study will be the chosen self-supporting college students
from Initao College. They will be given questionnaires to answer and will be interviewed as
well to gather the needed data for the study.

In gathering data, I as a researcher will identify first the research problem and the
participants of my study. The questionnaires will then be distributed to the identified
participants, following of course the health standard protocols required by the Inter
Agency Task Force (IATF). Interview followed for more information needed. The gathered
data will be then tallied, analyzed and presented for a clear understanding and as deemed
necessary. Conclusions and recommendations will be drawn based on the findings.
