1. an example of closed system. Sketch its diagram and define its boundary. What are the
forms of energy that can cross the boundary of the system (energy interaction between
system and surroundings)?

An example of a closed system is a Piston-cylinder arrangement without valves.

A piston-cylinder arrangement with valves is considered to be an open system as it

supports the exchange of matter particles as well as energy between the system and the
surroundings; however, if from such a system the valves are removed temporarily or
permanently, such a system gets converted into a closed system. This is because the
absence of valves in the piston-cylinder arrangement eliminates the flow of matter from
the surroundings to the system and vice versa.
2. A water pump is what type of a system? Why?
A water pump is an open system because energy and mass interact within this system.
Water (mass) is pumped in and out of water pump system using energy.
3. Is light-year a dimension of length? Explain your answer.
Yes. A light year is a unit of length. In SI units it is typically expressed in meters. Based
on its definition A light year is the distance that light will travel in one year in a vacuum.
A light-year, alternatively spelled light year, is a large unit of length used to express
astronomical distances and is equivalent to about 9.46 trillion kilometers (9.46x1012 km),
or 5.88 trillion miles (5.88x1012 mi)
4. An Olympic sized swimming pool holds 2,500 m3 of water. Express the volume of water in
unit galloons.
2500m^3 = 660,430.1 gal

5. If the pressure inside an oxygen tank is 3000 mmHg, what is this pressure in pounds-force per
square inch (psi)?
3000mmHg = 58.01 psi
