Magellan’s Expedition

REASONS FOR MAGELLAN’S EXPEDITION

2. He is looking for the spice island
 MOLUCCAS, INDONESIA – spice island
 March 16, 1521 – Magellan arrived in the Philippines

 March 17, 1521
→ They landed on the Beach of Homonhon and they are detected by Rajah Humabon (Chief of Island of
Limasawa and sent his men at Beach of Homonhon.

 Spaniards – goods, mirrors, bells, red caps, combs, ivory
 Filipino – fish, wine, bananas, figs (pomegranate)
 MARCH 31, 1521 – first mass in the Philippines
 APRIL 17, 1521 – Magellan sailed headed to Mactan, Cebu
 APRIL 21, 1521 – death of Magellan at kingdom of Mactan (Lapu-Lapu city)
 Magellan is 41 when he died thru stab wound of a poison arrow
 Magellan was not killed by Lapu-lapu but one of Filipino warriors. He was just the one recognized
because he is the leader of the warriors who fought.
 JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO - The MASTER OF SHIP of “THE CONCEPCION” took over the command
the expedition and captain the ship “THE VICTORIA back to Spain.
- under his command 18 out of 270 spaniards returned back to Spain in 1522
 THE TRINIDAD & THE VICTORIA - ships that continue the expedition going to spice island
 SEPTEMBER 1522 - the victoria docked back in spain
 THE VICTORIA SHIP - first ship to successfully circumnavigate the world and the only ship that
survive in the expedition.

LOAISA’S EXPEDITION

 Headed by Garcia Jofre de Loaisa with Juan Sebastian Elcano


 Sailed off on July, 24, 1525
 A hurricane separated the ships in 1526
 Loaisa died on July 30, 1526, Elcano died a few days later

VILLALOBOS EXPEDITION

 RUY LOPEZ DE VILLALOBOS


→ A Dominical Priest who gave the Spanish Name of the Philippines “LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS”
 NOVEMBER 1, 1542
→ Villalobos set sailed to Philippines from Navidad, Mexico
→ He followed the route taken by Magellan

→ SAN CRISTOBAL
→ SAN MARTIN
→ SAN JUAN
 FEBRUARY 2, 1543 – Villalobos arrived at the island of Mindanao
 HUNGER – The main reason Villalobos was forced to abandon his settlement in the Philippines.
 APRIL 4, 1544 – Ruy Lopez De Villalobos died in his prison cell in the island of AMBOYNA in
MOLUCCAS, INDONESIA
 JUAN GAETANO - Italian Sailor as the PRIMARY source of the Villalobos Expedition

LEGAZPI EXPEDITION
 Miguel Lopez de Legazpi
→ EL ADELANTADO AND EL VIEJO
→ He was a Spanish navigator and governor who established the first Spanish settlement in the
Philippines
 FEBRUARY 13, 1565 - Legazpi’s Expedition landed in CEBU then LEYTE, CAMIGUIN and BOHOL
 MARCH 16, 1565 – blood compact with the chieftain of Bohol as a sign of friendship
 DATU SIKATUNA – chieftain of Bohol
 KATUNA – real name of the chieftain of Bohol
 APRIL 27, 1565 - Legaspi returned to Cebu from Bohol and destroyed the town of Rajah TUPAS -
chieftain of Cebu
 FUERZA DE SAN PEDRO - A port that build by the Spanish Trading Outpost and stronghold for the
region.
 MANILA – Pearl of the Orient
 Martin de Goiti - Spanish Soldier who led the expedition from Cebu to Manila
 MAY 8, 1570 – Goiti arrived in Manila
 1571 – Spanish built the WALLED CITY – INTRAMUROS
 AUGUST 20, 1572 - Miguel Lopez de Legazpi died and buried in San Agustin in Intramuros
 1574 - Manila was bestowed the title “INSIGNE Y SIEMPRE LEAL CIUDAD DE ESPANA or
DISTINGUISHED AND EVER LOYAL CITY OF SPAIN
