CAN BUS LINE CHECK
Search Text:
Action: The CAN BUS Line consists of 2 wires connecting two or three electronic control
units (ECU):
• the Transmission controller (ZF EST37)
• the Brown Box controller (CAN machine interface)
• the Engine controller (EDC7 – W170 and W190 only).

Instability of the CAN BUS Line can lead to erratic behaviour of the machine
(Transmission in “Limp Home Mode”, erratic data shown on the digital monitor or
cluster instrument).

Specific resistance values between the two wires on the three branches of the CAN
BUS Line are necessary for the stability of the line and a correct data exchange
between the three ECU.

This line has a triple connector CAN_SPL (see FIG1 and FIG2) placed in the cab
electrical compartment, behind the operator seat.

W110 – W130 – W110 Evol. – W130 Evol. (FIG1)

Resistor plug 120 Ω

On these models only 2 controllers are connected by the

CAN BUS line through the CAN_SPL knot:
- Connector X70: transmission controller;
- Connector Y: Brown Box controller.

The third branch on the CAN_SPL knot is covered with a

resistor plug (120 Ω), used to keep the line stable.

Resistance values to be measured:

X70 Y - Connector X70: 120 Ω;
- Connector Y: 270 Ω.

W170 – W190 – W170 Evol. – W190 Evol. (FIG2)

On these models an additional line coming from the engine

A
control unit is connected to the CAN_SPL knot:
- Connector X70: transmission controller;
- Connector Y: Brown Box controller.
- Connector A: engine controller.

Resistance values to be measured:
- Connector X70: 120 Ω;
FIG 2 - Connector Y: 270 Ω;
- Connector A: 120 Ω.

In the case where the resistance values are out of above specifications, check the
ECU resistances:
if resistance values found on ECU are outside specification, then replace the ECU;
otherwise check the CAN BUS Line harness.
