Motor Starting Types Automatic Transfer Switch Modification
Across-The-Line Type D10630 Fire Pump Controllers with Automatic Transfer Switches
The most economical and most commonly used type of fire provide for power connections to the fire pump motor from
pump controller. Full voltage is applied to the motor for the primary power source or an alternate power source.
srarting, by use of a single motor contactor. Starting inrush If the primary power fails, the transfer switch automati-

Starting line current is 42% of across-the-line starting
The Automatic Transfer Switch is housed in a barriered
inrush approximately 250% rated motor full-load amperes
compartment of the Fire Pump Controller. This complete
with the autotransformer on the 65% tap as shipped from
assembly, consisting of Fire Pump Controller and Auto-
the factory. A 50% and 80% tap can be used.
matic Transfer Switch is factory assembled, wired, tested
and shipped as a single unit.
Primary Resistor Type D10650
A resistor, inserted in the motor line, results in soft starting
and smooth acceleration. A line contactor by passes the
resistor after a time delay. Starting line current is 65-74% of
across-the-line starting inrush approximately 390-444% of
rated motor full-load amperes.
F
Part Winding Type D10670
2-winding type motor required - the first winding is con-
nected to the line to start; the second connected in parallel
by a second contactor, after a time delay. Starting line
current is 65% of across-the-line starting inrush - approxi-
mately 390% of rated motor full-load amperes.

Wye-Delta Type D10680 and D10690

Under a normal automatic start mode, the start contactors
close connecting the motor to the line in a wye connection.
After approximately 3 second time delay the start contactors
open and the run contactor closes reconnecting the motor
in a Delta connection.
Starting line current is 33.3% of across-the-line starting
inrush - approximately 200% rated motor full-load amperes.
Closed transition type D10680 provides no power interrup-
tion to the motor during transition from Wye to Delta connec-
tion, This provides smooth acceleration.
Open transition type D10690 provides on brief interruption
of power to the motor during transition from start to run.

Solid State Reduced Voltage Type D10620

Solid State reduced voltage fire pump controllers provide
smooth, stepless transition from initial voltage to full run
voltage. This results in soft starting with smooth acceleration

and deceleration. Starting line current may be adjusted

Fire Pump Control General Information
General
Joslyn Clark Diesel Fire Pump Controllers are designed
and listed specifically for diesel engine driven fire pump
service. These controllers meet or exceed all require-
ments of the National Fire Protection Association Standard
NFPA 20, are listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and
approved by the Factory Mutual System.
The diesel controller provides four (4) major functions:
Starts the diesel engine automatically from water
pressure control or nonautomatically from manual
electric control.
Monitors engine as well as system conditions.
Maintains charge on engine starting batteries.
Initiates a weekly test of the system.

Standard Equipment
Type 2 Drip-Proof, Moisture Resistant, lockable
enclosure with break glass panel, is suitable for wall
or floor mounting. Painted with a UL Recognized
F Corrosion Resistant red baked enamel offers
superior resistance to the damp corrosive environ-
ment of pump rooms.
Voltage surge arrester for incoming 120 Volt AC
supply is connected to a line disconnect switch.
Provides an added degree of component pro-
tection against lightning strikes for greater reliability.
Visual indicators and audible alarms are provided to
indicate the following:
Automatic ON Charger Loss
Low Oil Pressure #1 Battery Overcharge
Engine Over Temp #1 Battery Failure
Safety Shut Down #2 Battery Overcharge

General Information Fire Pump Control
Alarm Panel
General
Joslyn Clark alarm panels provide visual signals and
audible alarms to monitor the status and operation of the
pump controller. A separate, "reliable" source of 115V
supervisory power must be provided to the alarm panel.
Each abnormal condition lights the appropriate light and
sounds the audible alarm. The audible alarm can be push
button silenced, but the light remains lit until the abnormal-
ity is cleared. Signals are independent of each other and
the panel operation will repeat for each new abnormal
condition, regardless of the previous status.

General Information Fire Pump Control
Medium Voltage Type
General
Medium voltage fire pump controllers are primarily used to start large
horsepower motors. These starters are designed for automatic starting of
squirrel cage motors when starting current must be reduced.

Motors starting current at 2300 volts or 4160 volts is considerably below that
at 460 volts. This eliminates many problems that exists when starting large
horsepower motors at lower voltages.

Approvals and Standards

Joslyn Clark Controllers are UL listed and FM approved for applications up to
7200 volts. They are built to meet or exceed the following standards:

NEMA ICS2-329 class E2

UL 347 High Voltage Industrial Control Equipment
NFPA 20 The Installation of Electric Fire Pumps
NFPA 70 National Electrical Code

F Construction Details
Enclosures - Free standing, single high, non withdrawable starter
mounted in a NEMA 2 enclosure. NEMA 3R and 12 enclosures
are also available. NEMA 4 design includes an outer shell. The
enclosure is painted, all other parts are plated with corrosion
resistant materials. Type 4X outer enclosure is constructed with
#304 stainless steel.

Grounding - The control enclosure can be grounded through the

conduit connections and by ground wire to grounding pad.

Isolating Means - The isolating means is Fault Making, Load

Breaking, visible break disconnect switch externally operable.
The 3 blades are grounded in the open position. It has an
auxiliary contact that disconnects the control supply when
opened. It has a mechanical interlock so that the switch had to
be open before the high voltage door can be opened, and the
door has to be closed before the isolating switch can be closed.
The contactor is interlocked so that the isolating switch can not
be opened with contactor closed.

Power Fuse - Three medium voltage power fuses R-rated are

provided for short circuit protection.

Fuses - For Control Transformers - Three medium voltage control

transformers primary E-rated fuses are provided for short circuit
protection of control transformers.

Motor Starting - Manual electric starting may be obtained when

control circuit power is available by push button or by an
externally operable handle through a lever which actuates interlock
contacts. Manual electric starting causes the starting contactor coils
to be energized.

If control circuit power is not available, manual mechanical starting

may be obtained by the externally operable handle through a lever
which mechanically closes the motor run contact.
