DIESEL ENGINE DRIVE 2051 Chapter 11 Diesel Engine Drive 11.1 General. ILL This chapter provides requirements for minimum, performance of diesel engine drivers, T1.1.2 Accessory devices, such as monitoring and signaling means, are included where necessary (o ensure minimum performance of the aforementioned equipment 11.1.3" Engine Type. 11.1.8.1 Diesel engines for fire pump drive shall be of the compression ignition pe. 11.1.3.2 Sparkignited internal combustion engines shall not be used 11.2 Engines. 11.2.1 Listing. Engines shall be listed for fire pump service. 11.2.2 Engine Ratings. 1.22.1 Engines shall have a nameplate indicating the listed horsepower rating available to drive the pump, 112.2.2* The horsepower capability of the engine, when equipped for fire pump service, shall have a 4-hour minimum horsepower rating not less than 10 percent greater than the listed horsepower on the engine nameplate, 11.228 Engines shall be acceptable for horsepower ratings listed by the testing laboratory for standard SAE. conditions, 112.24 A deduction of 3 percent from engine horsepower rating at standard SAE conditions shall be made for each 1000 i (300 m) of altitude above 800 ft (91 m) 1.22.5 deduction of 1 percent from engine horsepower rating as comected (o standard SAE conditions shall be made for every 10°F (5.6°C) above 77°F (25°C) ambient temperature. 1.22.6 Where rightangle gear drives (see 7.5.1.8) are used between the vertical turbine pump and its driver, the horse- power requirement of the pump shall be increased to allow for power losin the gear drive. 1.2.2.7 Afler the requirements of 11.2.2.1 through 1.22.6 hhave been complied with, engines shall have a hour mini nium horsepower rating equal to or greater than the brake horsepower required to drive the pump at its rated speed under any conditions listed for environmental conditions ‘under pump load. 11.23 Engine Power Connection to Pump. A11.23.1 Horizontal shaft engines shall be provided with a rieans for direct attachment of a flexible coupling adaptor, & flexible connecting shaft adaptor, a stub shaft, or a torsional coupling to the engine flywheel, (Ser Setion 6.5 and 7.5.1.4) 11.24 Engine Speed Controls. 11.2.4.1 Speed Control Governor, Stadt Revisions ext deletions and fgure/table revisions 11.24.12 The governor shall be field adjustable and set and secured to maintain rated pump speed at maximum pump Toad. N1L24.1.3 Mechanical fuel injection engines with a mechani- cal governor speed control device shall be allowed to employ fan clectricactiated speed control override system to achiove speed control of less than 10 percent, provided the require iments of 11.24.11 are still met in the event that any compo- nent of the electric actuator speed control system Fails. 11.2.4.1.4 Engines shall accelerate t rated output speed within 20 seconds, 11.24.2* lectronie Fuel Management Control 11.24.2.1 Akternate Electronic Control Module, Engines that incorporate an electronic control module (ECM) to aceon plish and control the fuel injection process shall have an alter nate ECM permanently mounted and wired so the engine can produce its full rated power ousput in the event of a failure of the primary ECM, 11.24.22 ECM Vollage Protection. ECMs shall be protected {rom transient voltage spikes and reverse de current, 3 ECM Selector Switch, 3.1 Operation, (A) The transition from the primary ECM to the alternate, or alternate to primary shall be controlled by a hand/automatie ‘itch without an off postion, (B)_ When the switch required in 11.2.4.2.5.1(A) is im the auto- atic position, the transition from the primary ECM to the alternate, or alternate to primary shall be accomplished auto- ‘matically upon failure of either ECM. (©)_ When the switeh required in 11.2.4.2.3.1(A) isin the hand position, the transition from: the primary ECM to the alternate, ‘oF from alternate to primary shall be accomplished manually 11.24.2.8.2 Supervision. A visual indicator shall be provided fon the engine instrument panel, and a supervisory signal shall be provided to the controller when the ECM selector switeh is positioned to the alternate ECM, 11.24.23.8 Contacts, (A) The contacts for each circuit shall be rated for both the ‘minimum and maxinium current and voltage. (B) The total resistance of each ECM circuit through the selector switch shall be approved by the engine manufacturer, 11.24.2384 Enclosure. (A) The selector switch shall be enclosed in a NEMA Type 2 Aripproof enclosure, (B) Where special environments exist, suitably rated enclo- sues shall be used, 11.24.23.5 Mounting. (A) The selector switeh and enclosure shall be engi ted, (B) The selector switeh enclosure and/or the selector switeh inside shall be isolated from engine vibration to prevent any deterioration of contaet operation, 1 = Section deletions. = New material 2019 Eton
