SYSTEMS
MODULE 6 & 7: BASIC ELECTRICAL WIRING DESIGN

1. LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this module, the students are expected to:
a) Understand the general considerations in wiring design, determine an estimated load, system
voltage and circuit protection code provisions;
b) Prepare a load tabulation and calculation, and riser diagram;
c) Understand code provisions in residential buildings;
d) Prepare complete electrical layout (e.g. power layout, lighting layout, electrical notes, table of
legends, riser diagram, schedule of load and computation)

2. EXPECTED OUTPUTS
At the end of this module, the students should complete or submit the following outputs:
a) Preparation of electrical layout such as power and lighting layout;
b) Preparation of load tabulation, calculation and electrical riser diagram, electrical notes and
guidelines.

3. ACTIVITY TIMELINE
a) Reading and comprehension of reference material (at your convenience).

I. BASIC ELECTRICAL WIRING DESIGN

1. GENERAL CONSIDERATION
The file is a section from the book Architectural Utilities 2 Electrical and Mechanical Equipment
authored by Salvan, (1999). It outlines general considerations in electrical design, in the most practical
and economic way possible. You should be able to understand the identified criteria and be able to
consider them on your learning activity.

2. SYSTEM VOLTAGE AND LOAD

The file is a section from the book Electrical Layout and Estimate, Second Edition by Fajardo,
M. Jr. & Fajardo, L. (2000). It introduces the power supply from the utility company or what transformer
is producing. In it, you will discover what specification to be used in specifying transformers vis a vis
electric motors. You will also learn why the current voltage supply of 120/240 volts replaced the old
110/220 volts supply system. You will also learn the purpose of ground in the electrical system. Further,
you will learn the code requirements for a branch circuit.

3. CIRCUIT PROTECTION
The file is excerpt from the book Architectural Utilities 2 Electrical and Mechanical Equipment
authored by Salvan, (1999). In the book section you will learn specifically about Branch Circuit Design
Guidelines for residential buildings.

4. LOAD TABULATION AND CALCULATION

The file is excerpt from the book Electrical Layout and Estimate, Second Edition by Fajardo, M.
Jr. & Fajardo, L. (2000). In this file you will learn from the illustration how to compute the circuit loads,
total load. You will also learn how to determine the main over current protection together with the feeder
wire.
