Title: Moment of a Force


Aim: To determine the mass of a unknown object using the principle of moments
Materials/Apparatus:
- Meter rule
- Triangular prism
- 60 g mass
- String
- Object (unknown mass)
Diagram:

Method:
1. Balance the meter rule on the triangular prism
2. Hang the 60 g mass 10 cm from the pivot point
3. Hang the object on the meter rule and move it till it balances
4. Record the distance of the object from the pivot point
5. Repeat steps 2 to 4, placing the 60 g at distances 15 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm, 35 cm and 40 cm from the pivot
6. Plot a graph of object distance against mass distance
7. Determine the mass of the object
