Intro to Stoichiometry Webquest

Review
To be able to do stoichiometry, you will need to have the following knowledge/skills
- Write and balance a chemical equation
- Be able to calculate molar mass
- Be able to convert between particles, moles, grams

Day 1
Stoichiometry: Mole Ratios

1. Define the word ratio use any online dictionary resource.

Open “Reactants, Products and Leftovers” from PhET by clicking the green “Run Now”
button
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/reactants-products-and-leftovers

Open the “Real Reaction” tab and make sure the reaction is set to “Make water”

2. Write the balanced reaction for making water

3. Set the value of hydrogen to be 2 in the bottom part of the screen. What happens in
the boxes?

4. Set the value of oxygen to be 1 in the bottom part of the screen. What happens in the
boxes?

5. How many waters were formed from the above combination of 2 hydrogens to 1
oxygen?
6. What do you notice about these values compared to the balanced chemical equation?

7. Change the value of hydrogen to 4 and oxygen to 2. What happens?

8. The coefficients in the balanced chemical equation are used to determine mole ratios.
9.
Write the mole ratios found in the reaction “Making water”

____H2: ____O2 ____H2: ____H2O ____O2: ____H2O

19. Using the reaction of copper (II) sulfate with sodium cyanide, choose which conversion
factor you will use to convert the given mass of copper (II) sulfate to moles of copper (II)
sulfate (Slide 4). Why is this answer correct?

20. Calculate the number of moles of copper (II) sulfate using the conversion factor you
choose in the above problem (Slide 5). Show your work!

21. Using the reaction, choose which conversion factor you will use to convert the moles of
copper (II) sulfate into moles of copper (II) cyanide (Slide 6). Why is this answer
correct?

22. Convert moles of copper (II) sulfate into moles of copper (II) cyanide using the
conversion factor you choose above (Slide 7). Show your work!
23. Calculate the molar mass of copper (II) cyanide (Slide 8). ¡Show your work!

24. Which of the steps provided is the correct third step needed to convert moles of copper
(II) cyanide to grams of copper (II) cyanide (slide 9). Explain why!

25. Complete the problem presented in slides 11-15. Try doing this on your own first (slide
11) and show your work for each step!

Go back to the home page and open the page that is labeled “Practice”

26. Using the first reaction provided, how many grams of iodine must react to give 4.63
grams of iron (III) iodide. Show all work and check each step along the way with the
slides!

27. Using the second reaction provided, what is the mass of O2 needed to burn 25 grams of
methane, CH4? Show all work and check each step along the way with the slides!
