What I Need to Do

Neoclassicism emerged in the middle of the eighteenth century as a

reaction to the Rococo and late Baroque movements. While romanticism also
emerged during this time period, its focus was on the contemporary or novel as
opposed to the conventional.
You will study Romantic and Neoclassical art in this Unit. Their influences
can still be clearly seen in the paintings, sculptures, and other artworks created

1
today by well-known international artists as well as some of our own national
artists. Some of the buildings that are still standing now exhibit the attributes
and characteristics of those times.
You will study the traits of Neoclassicism and Romanticism in art
history as well as the numerous painters that gained fame during each era.
The trends that flourished in western Europe and the United States
following the Rococo era, roughly from the late eighteenth to the nineteenth
century, were neoclassicism and romanticism.

reality. The romantic writes gave important to emotion, imagination and self-
experience. The poetry expressed personal feelings of the poet as it is
spontaneous.

Neoclassical painters depicted subjects from Classical literature and

history, as used in earlier Greek art and Republican Roman art, using somber
colors with occasional brilliant highlights, to convey moral narratives of self-denial
and self-sacrifice fully in keeping with the supposed ethical superiority of
Antiquity.
