Real life application of SURDS

Alex and Fred are training for the upcoming TIS sports day. They both go to the ground near to
their house every evening. The running track is in a shape of the rectangle with constant breadth
of 2 units all around shown below. Alex runs on the inner line ABCD of the track 5 times whereas
Fred runs on the outer line EFGH of the track 3 times every evening.

E F
A B
2 cm
Grassy Area

D C
H G
Calculate:

 the outer length and width of the running track.

Outer Length: 3 √3+1+2+2= 3 √3+5
Outer width: 2 √3+2+2=2 √3+4

 the area between the inner and the outer path of the track
Inner Path: 2 √3 (3 √3+1)
6x3+2 √3
18 + 2 √3cm2

Outer Path: (3 √3+5) (2 √3+4)

3 √3 (2 √3+4) +5(2 √3 +4)
3x2x √3x √3
6x3+12 √3+10 √3+20
18+12√3+10√3+20
20+18+12√3+10√3
38+22 √3cm2

Final Answer: 38+22 √3 – (18+2 √3)

38-18 +22 √3-2 √3
20+ 20 √3cm2

 Percentage of the path to the total area of the ground.

20+20√3/38+22√3
20+20√3/38+22√3*38-22√3/38-22√3
20(38-22√3) + 20√3(38-22√3)/-8
760-440√3 + 760√3 – 1320/-8
-500+320√3/-8
-574/-8*100
71.75
72%

 distance run by Alex every evening

5*Perimeter of the Path ABCD

5*(2*(l+b))

5*(2*((3√3+1)+2√3)))
10*(5√3+1)

50√3+10cm

 distance run by Fred every evening

3*Perimeter of the Path EFGH
3*(2*(l+b))
6*(3√3+5 + 2√3+4)
6*(5√3+9)
30√3+54cm

 Show with calculation, who runs more everyday.

Fred Distance: 105.96
Alex Distance: 96.60
Fred runs more than alex

A week before the sports day, Alex increased his running distance by 35% whereas Fred only increased
the distance by 20%.

 Calculate the new distance run by each student every evening.

Freds New Distance:
105.96+(20/100)*105.96
127.15cm

Alex’s New Distance

96.60+(35/100)*96.60
130.41cm
On the day before the sports day, Alex and Fred want to run equal distance. It was decided that person
covering less distance will increase. Who will run

 more distance
130.41-127.15
3.26
Fred will have to increase his distance by 3.26cm
