The 1955 Kintyre Estates Sale

In July 1955 The Kintyre Estates of The 10th Duke of Argyll were offered for sale by auctioneers Knight, Frank &
Rutley of London in Campbeltown Town Hall.

A price is noted for each property and the name of those properties for which ‘no sale’ was reported is under-lined and
followed with an asterisk * .

The 28,857 acres of properties were divided into 5 main sections - Glenlussa, 10,689 acres; Machrihanish, 8,714

6,950 and Campbeltown £9,505 the sale realised £148,855 with a further £29,710 of property being left for later
disposal through private arrangements. Sale proceeds would net nearly £180,000 - just enough, in 21st-century
terms, to buy, perhaps even furnish, a bungalow with a fairly big lawn and put a second-hand ‘Roller’ in the garage !

The list here was compiled by Carradale’s Duncan Ritchie and ‘added up’ by Donald Kelly in Muasdale in 2002.
