1955 Sale of The 10th Duke of Argyll's Kintyre Estates
In July 1955 The Kintyre Estates of The 10th Duke of Argyll were offered for sale by auctioneers Knight, Frank &
Rutley of London in Campbeltown Town Hall.
A price is noted for each property and the name of those properties for which ‘no sale’ was reported is under-lined and
followed with an asterisk * .
The 28,857 acres of properties were divided into 5 main sections - Glenlussa, 10,689 acres; Machrihanish, 8,714
acres; Southend, 6,220 acres; Bellochantuy, 2,038 acres and, finally, some town properties in Campbeltown itself
and accumulating a total assessed rental of £13,195 per annum.
GLENLUSSA totalling 10,689 acres - Low Peninver £2,000; New Peninver * £2,110; High Peninver £800;

Given the foregoing results, Glenlussa £48,400; Machrihanish £50,200; Southend £33,800; Bellochantuy £
6,950 and Campbeltown £9,505 the sale realised £148,855 with a further £29,710 of property being left for later
disposal through private arrangements. Sale proceeds would net nearly £180,000 - just enough, in 21st-century
terms, to buy, perhaps even furnish, a bungalow with a fairly big lawn and put a second-hand ‘Roller’ in the garage !
