MID EXAM – BUILDING PHYSICS

Name : Fitria Isnaini Putri Fadhilah

NIM : 2502047940
Class : LB44

1. The picture shows a villa and is surrounded by a relatively large green area.
Assume that the area behind the exterior wall is an open land, so that the wind
flows freely over the villa.

The Question:
a. Propose a suitable ventilation system (natural ventilation, or artificial
ventilation, or both) for the bedroom and the living room.
b. Explain or discuss your option!

Answer:

a. I think the ventilation system that is suitable for the bedroom and living room
in this project is a hybrid ventilation system. So, we use both natural
ventilation by making openings such as windows and adding artificial
ventilation such as mechanised fans.

b. It’s a good idea to choose mixed mode hybrid ventilation system because I
want to take advantage of the environment around the site which has a lot of
large green areas. I assume that large open land with a lot of green area is
very suitable for the natural ventilation system, considering that it means that
there are no buildings around the site that block it, so the chance of air to
flow over the villa is very high.

In addition to complement the natural ventilation system I choose

mechanized fans. The reason why I choose mechanized fans as an artificial
ventilation system is because in some cases, using natural ventilation alone
is not possible due to the design and location of the building. Therefore, a
mechanical system is needed to inject clean air and remove stale oxygen.
There is no detailed information in the question, so let’s assume this villa
project is located in a tropical country which is very humid and has summer
every year, of course we need an artificial ventilation system to complement
natural ventilation such as mechanized fans.

For the type of natural ventilation that I will use is cross ventilation and stack
ventilation instead of single-sided ventilation because both allow for better air
changes compared to single-sided ventilation systems.

2. a. Explain the direct and the reflected sound!

b. What is the best solution to reduce the reflected sound energy as well as to
keep the sound natural at the same time?

Answer:
a. Direct sound is a sound that come directly from the source to the receiving
point (ear), it is undisturbed and free from any reflection, so it sounds clear.
While Reflected sound is counted as a ‘bad sound’ because it changes the
original sound wave because the sound wave distorted by reflection that
comes later.
b. To solve reflected sound but keep the sound natural at the same time we
need to reduce the reflected sound. To reduce massive reflected sound we
need to reduce flat surface reflection and to keep sound more natural we
need to combine both absobers and diffusors.

Explanation how diffusor and absorber work

When the reflected sound meets a flat surface, what happens is that the
sound bounces off and we need to use an absorber so the reflected sound
can be muted, but if we only use an absorber then the sound will be too
muted and make it unnatural, so we need to combine the absorber with the
diffuser.
when reflected sound meet curved surfaces diffuser, the sound scattered into
different directions because the diffuser smoothing out destructive
interferences throughout the room.
