BMI (Body Mass Index) and DBW (Desirable Body Weight) Calculation

Objective: By studying Module 2 , Lesson 1, on energy Balance, each student will be able to determine
his/her own:

1. BMI/Body Mass index


2. DBW/Desirable body Weight

ACTIVITY

Using your own height, weight, age and physical activity (refer to Module2, Lesson 1).
1. Compute your own DBW;
DBW= Height in cm-100
Desirable Body Weight (DBW): DBW= 157 cm – 100= 57 kg

2. Adjusted DBW;
DBW Filipino Standard= DBW-10%
= 57- 5.7
= 51. 3 or 51 kg.

3. BMI; and
Height: 157
Weight: 47

BMI= 47/1.57
= 47/2.46
= 19. 105 or 19. 11

4. Determine your weight Status/Nutritional Status.

Energy Balance
Calculation of Total Energy Requirement

Objective: By studying Module 2, Lesson 2, on Energy Balance, each student will be able to determine
his/her own:

1. TER/Total Energy Requirement per day;


2. distribute the TER to daily energy allowance.

ACTIVITY

1. Calculate your own TER;

TER=DBW x Activity
TER= 51 x 40
= 2040 kcal/day

2. Adjusted TER if needed, if not, skip no.2.;

3. Distribute TER to CHO, CHON and Fat Allowance (kcal);

CHO Allowance kcal= TER x .65 2040x.65= 1326


CHON Allowance kcal= TER x .15 2040x.15= 306
Fat Allowance kcal= TER x .25 2040x.25=510

4. Covert CHO, CHON and Fat Allowance to Requirement (gm).

CHO Requirement gm= CHO Allowance /4 = 1326/4 = 331.5


CHON Requirement gm= CHON Allowance/4 = 306/ 4 = 76.5
Fat Requirement= Fat Allowance/ 9 = 510/ 9 = 56. 66 or 56.7
