Stanbio Glucose Oxidase Method

Solve the following:

Demographics Profile:
Name: Coreen Samantha Aquino
Age: 20 years old
Gender: Female
Date of Birth: March 21, 2002
Data and Results:
Au = 0.250
As = 0.230
Computations:
Glucose (mg/dL) = Au/As x 100
Glucose (mg/dL) = 0.250/0.230 x 100
Glucose (mg/dL) = 108.69 mg/dL
Interpretations:
Above Reference Range

Critical Thinking:
1. Compare the method of Stanbio with the Profame in determining the glucose in the serum.
 It is a spectrophotometric method for determining the concentration of glucose in serum/plasma
by measuring the NADP formed from hexokinase-catalyzed glucose and intermediate
transformations.
2. Why is it important that the laboratory to establish their own reference range?
 To assist them in describing what is typical for a specific group of people based on age, gender,
and other characteristics. It can be used as a guide to understand what your results mean and how
to manage your own health.
3. Aside from FBS, what are the other test to measure sugar in the serum?
 Hemoglobin A1c test which can be used to estimate your average blood sugar level.
 Oral Glucose Tolerance Test
4. What are the specimen considerations for glucose measurement?
 Random or Fasting Tests. In fasting test, you cannot eat or drink anything except for water for at
least 8 hours before they conduct your test.
Glucose Determination using Profame
Study Questions:
1. Name the three classes of carbohydrates according to number of sugar units.
 Mono-, Di-, and Polysaccharides Monosaccharides contain one sugar unit. Disaccharides are
composed of 2 sugar units. Polysaccharides contain thousands of sugar units.
2. What is the main role of Carbohydrates in the body?
 One of the primary functions of carbohydrates is to provide energy to your body.
3. Explain hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
 Hypoglycemia is when the value of glucose is below the reference range. While, the
Hyperglycemia is when the value of glucose is above the reference range.
4. Explain the difference between NIDDM and IDDM.
 NIDDM is an acronym that stands for Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, also known as
Type 2 diabetes. IDDM is an abbreviation for Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, also known
as Type 1 diabetes.
5. What methods provide a high degree of specificity for estimating glucose?
 Enzymatic methods.

Solve the Following:

Demographic Information of Patient
Name: Coreen Samantha Aquino
Age: 20 years old
Gender: Female
Date of Birth: March 21, 2002
Data and Results:
Au = 0.020
As = 0.025
Computation:
C= Au/As x 100
C = 0.020/0.025 x 100
C = 80 mg/dL

Interpretation: Normal/Within Reference Range
