■ Functions
Open-loop control and closed-loop control functions
The converter control contains a high-quality sensorless
vector control with speed and current controls as well as motor
and converter protection.
Setpoint input The setpoint can be entered internally or externally: internally as a fixed setpoint, motorized potentiometer
setpoint or jog setpoint; externally via the PROFIBUS
IBUS interface or via an analog input of the customer's
terminal block.
The internal fixed setpoint and the motorized potentiometer setpoint can be switched or adjusted by control
commands from all interfaces.
Ramp-function generator The ramp-function generator prevents unintentional step changes in setpoints, and thus mechanical over-
loading of the drive train. The functions it offers include separately adjustable ramp-up and ramp-down
times.
Vdc max controller 1) The Vdc max controller automatically prevents overvoltages in the DC link, e.g. with ramp-down times which
have been set too short.
Automatic restart 1) The automatic restart switches on the drive again following a power failure and system recovery.
Flying restart 1) The flying restart permits connection of the converter to a rotating motor.
I2t acquisition for motor The motor temperature is calculated in a motor model stored in the converter software, taking into account
protection the current speed. Perfect accuracy in determining the motor temperature is, however, not possible because,
for example, the ambient temperature is not considered. For greater accuracy, an input for a KTY84 tem-
perature sensor or PTC thermistor is provided on the customer's terminal block.
Evaluation of motor temperature Motor protection by evaluation of a KTY84 temperature sensor or PTC thermistor.
The type of temperature sensor can be selected on the operator panel. When connecting a KTY84 sensor,
the limits for alarm or shutdown can be entered on the operator panel. When connecting a PTC thermistor,
the response to triggering can be defined (alarm or shutdown).
Motor blocking protection A blocked motor is detected and protected from thermal overload by a fault shutdown. Monitoring is
performed at operating frequencies over 10 % of the rated motor frequency.
Power section protection
Earth fault monitoring on output An earth fault on the output side is detected by a total current monitor and results in shutdown in earthed-
side neutral systems.
Electronic short-circuit protection A short-circuit between motor and converter (on the converter output terminals, in the motor cable, in the
on output side terminal box) is detected, and the converter is shut down.
Thermal overload protection Triggering of the overheating threshold results either in a shutdown or automatic influencing of the control
(pulse frequency, output current) so that a reduction in the thermal load is achieved. If necessary, this results
in a reduction in motor speed (down to zero depending on the load characteristic).
Following elimination of the cause of the fault (e.g. improvement in ventilation), the original operating
values are automatically selected again.
The response of the converter on overheating (reduction in output/shutdown) can be specifically set by the
customer on the operator panel.

Overload capability The category must be selected using a risk evaluation for the
drive.
Drives with a quadratic load torque require the full torque at the
rated speed. Higher starting torques or load surges do not usually To achieve this the drives can be roughly divided into the follow-

■ Derating data
Compensation of current derating as a function of
site altitude / ambient temperature
If the converters are operated at a site altitude >2000 m above sea level,
the maximum permissible output current can be calculated
using the following tables according to the selected
degree of protection for the cabinet unit. The permissible
compensation between the site altitude and the ambient temperature
has already been taken into account in the defined values.

areas is assured when using the proposed filters provided that the
> 500 < 20 – > 20 L23 system is an earthed-neutral system (TN system).
In practice, the line configuration on which individual converters
operate is often not known, i.e. the line short circuit power at the
connection point of the converter is not known, so it is recom-
mended that a line reactor is always connected in series with the
converter. For this reason, drive converter cabinet units up to an
output of 500 kW are equipped as standard with a 2 % line reactor.
The line reactor can only be omitted (option L22), if the value for
RSC
C is lower than that shown in the above table. This is the case
when, as shown in the following figure, the converter is connect-
ed to the line through a transformer with the appropriate rating.

(1LG4/1LG6 6 and 1LA8)
It is generally recommended to use the proven 1LA and 1LG stan-
dard motors from Siemens.
With respect to thermal stress, these motors can also be used at
the full rated output even with converter operation, with partial
utilization according to temperature class F. If exclusive utilization
according to temperature class B is required, the output must be
reduced by 10 %.
