Class: VI A-I Subject: Science
Period: 01 (40 min) Topic: Expansion and contraction
SLO (s): Students will be able to use particle model to explain the expansion and contraction of solids, liquid and
gases.
Skills focused on: observing and comparing
Resources: Textbook, A/V aids, board, marker
Methodologies: Brainstorming, conceptual learning and discussion
What do you know about Brownian motion?
What factors affect the particles movement?
What happen to the water when it is heated?
Will the volume of solids increase or decreases on heating?
Ask the students if they have ever heard about the term expand and contract.if not ask them to make a
guess what it could be.
Explain expansion and contraction with ample examples .
T.book pg # 37
Liquid, solids and gases all expand when they are heated .when they cool down, the opposite happens, they
contract.
This happens because heating gives atoms and molecules more energy. This causes them to move faster and
bump into each other more often and with a greater force.
Gases expand more than liquids and liquids expand more than solids .
Share the Success Criteria
Ask them to complete the written work.
Activity #: Discussion
Success Criteria: Remember to:
All particles expand on heating and contract when they cool down.
Students write their answer independently and neatly.
Assessment Plan: Students will be assessed based on their participation in class discussion and written work.
Questions will be asked from students as a prompt to clarify the understanding of the whole class
C.W: Textbook pgs.37 test youself Q#2
H.W: Textbook pg # 37 test yourself Q#1
Online Assignment (if any): -
Explanation:
Explain that gases are squashy and can easily be compressed. If a sealed container can resist expansion
when gas is heated there will be more pressure inside the container. Millions of air molecules inside the
balloon move rapidly in all directions, bouncing of each other and the walls of the balloon.
Air pressure is highest inside the balloon. That is why it remain inflated, otherwise it would deflate.
A passenger aircraft has pressurized cabin to maintain the same air pressure throughout the flight. Air
pressure outside the aircraft may vary depending on the atmospheric conditions. Air outside the air craft
lowers as you go high above the sea level.
A barometre is an instrument which is used to measure air pressure. Air pressure varies depending on weather
conditions. A fall in air pressure may ,mean that it might rain. So it helps weather forecasters to predict the
weather.

C.W: T.book pg# 38 Test yourself Q#3
Explanation:
Work book pg # 19
Teacher will discuss the them question and take the responses from the student.
Explain why materials have to be stored in a container.
Explanation:
Worksheet 3-1
Allow the students the text book if they need it .
Let them write about the volume and shape of solid, liquid and gases in given condition.
Provide on spot guidance.
Worksheet 3-3
Teacher will explain the experiment by using following method
Collect two glasses one with hot water and one with cold water.
Leave the water to stand for a minute so that it stops moving.
Carefully put one drop of food color in the water.Make sure donot stir the water.
Ask them to observe the glasses after different time intervals.
Ask them to draw the picture of their observation .
Observe seat work and provide on spot guidance.
