CONST 221: SAFETY MEETING PROJECT OVERVIEW

SAFETY MEETING LESSON PLAN: MATERIAL USE; HANDLING & DISPOSAL.

1. Overview

This plan is focused on the establishment of relevant strategies to the use; handling & disposal of
material in the construction industry, adjusting these good practices to the current OSHA regulations,
to assure the safety and health of workers, protection of the environment, equipment and tools.

2. Learning Objectives

- Point out statistics related to the Use, handling & disposal of material in the Construction Industry
to identify the mean activities related to the generation of waste materials.
- Describe and assign responsibilities related to the Material use, handling & disposal management,
identification of hazards and implementation of safety measures, and execution of the properly
training.
- Train the new employees (included contractors), and reinforcement of current employers about
good practices and hazards concerning to Material use, handling and disposal. Include quick
evaluation.
- Define forms and instructive to make following of the training and execution of the plan.

3. Introduction

Material waste is one of the most difficult factors to control in construction projects of all
sizes. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that total waste from construction-related
projects was double that of municipal waste from households and businesses in 2018—and the
United States already produces the most household waste by volume of any country. The U.S.
produces too much trash overall, and the construction industry is a huge contributor. Waste
generation is on the rise and expected to skyrocket in the near future. Estimates are based on
publicly available data from government and industry organizations.

 600 million tons of Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris were generated in the United
States in 2018, which is more than twice the amount of generated municipal solid waste.
 Demolition represents more than 90 percent of total C&D debris generation, while construction
represents less than 10 percent.
 Just over 455 million tons of C&D debris were directed to next use and just under 145 million
tons were sent to landfills.
 Aggregate was the main next use for the materials in the C&D debris.

CONST 221: SAFETY MEETING PROJECT OVERVIEW

Although there isn’t a universal solution to solving the construction waste problem, many
construction firms are finding innovative ways to reduce their contribution to the pileup.
Methodologies like lean construction and value engineering aim to decrease waste in the planning
stages, while post-planning construction services provide waste removal and disposal solutions.

4. Planned activities, discussion, or participant interaction.

The next activities will allow us to reach out our objectives described allow.

Activity 1 : List

- Collect all data and statistic from official sources to identify potential improvements in different
activities in the construction area.
- Enlist responsibilities related to the management of the use, handling and disposal of material in
construction areas.

Activity 2: Training

- Develop a brief but effective training program about the use, handling and disposal of material in
the construction field.

5. Visual aid materials (PowerPoint)/Video

a. Present the current safety plan based on power point presentation.
b. Compare the Current Safety Plan (CSP) with OSHA regulations.
c. Watch OSHA videos about use, handling and disposal of material in the construction
industry.
d. Design Safety Fact Sheet, visual Flowchart.

6. Evaluation to ensure learning has taken place.

Training and evaluate of all the employees about the Safety Plan with a “True or False” option test,
control forms, and inspection list.
