ENERGY DISSIPATION
Introduction

Potential Energy is converted into kinetic energy

and this has to be dissipated before the water is
released in the river downstream
This is necessary to protect the river bed and the
hydraulic structure it self.
Highest importance is to have control over the
area where the energy is dissipated.

ENERGY DISSIPATION
Introduction

1 < Fr1 < 1.7 : undulations, steady waves “undular jump”

1.7 < Fr1 < 2.5 : Series of small rollers at surface “weak jump” relatively low
,

energy dissipation

2.5 < Fr1 < 4.5 : Oscillating jets entering the jump “oscillating jump”,
Relatively large wave at downstream water surface

4.5 < Fr1 < 9 : stable conditions “steady jump”;

E  45-70%

Fr1 > 9 : E  80%; Strong forces at bottom “strong jump”;

to be avoided (bed erosion)

In general, only for dam height smaller than 100m because of cavitation
and abrasion issues (< 35m/s)
• Type II for large structures and Fr > 4.5
• Type III and SAF type for small structures
• Type IV for oscillating jump flow conditions (Fig 19.16 H.C.)

1. Profile that directs the overflow jet to fall directly down on a concrete apron at
the toe of the dam
2. Profile that uses nappe splitters to spread the jets over a larger area to reduce
away the focus of the impact
3. Profile that uses a trajectory bucket to deflect the jet further away to dissipate
energy on the way down and to increase the distance of the impact zone.

ENERGY DISSIPATION, ROLLER/FLIP BUCKET
Roller / Flip Bucket
Roller/ Flip bucket is used when tail
water depth is greater than 1.1 times
the required conjugate depth for the
formation of the hydraulic jump =>
submerged

The slotted is superior to the solid

because it is less sensible to lower
TWL, smoother water surface and less
transport of stones back into the bucket
