20. Course description (as per the published catalogue):


This course is designed to help students refine their accuracy and fluency and build
effective oral communication skills in both academic and non-academic contexts
through practicing active and critical listening skills including note-taking, practicing
in group discussions, debates, and giving oral presentations. It also expands
students’ knowledge in the grammar, vocabulary, idioms, phrasal verbs and
colloquialism that are necessary for effective and accurate oral communication. In
addition, it also integrates reading skills related to listening comprehension to
improve students’ search for and focus on key points. The three institutional credits
awarded for this course count toward graduation requirements and are, thus,
calculated into the general as well as the major GPA (MCGPA).

21. Program Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOS):

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts, processes,


practices, properties and principles related to language, literature, and
linguistics;
2. Demonstrate capacity for close, active reading and critical analysis of diverse
forms of discourse and genres in extended written and spoken texts on a wide
range of topics of general and academic nature in language, literature, and
linguistics;
3. Develop research skills in different disciplines using quantitative and qualitative
methods;
4. Apply methods and techniques of linguistics and literary criticism; explain how
genre, culture, race, gender and various related factors impact on literature in
different periods, and how literature shapes people’s perceptions of
themselves and their world; and
5. Communicate effectively in speaking by displaying accuracy in pronunciation,
grammar, vocabulary and appropriate degree of colloquialism, and in writing by
producing coherent essays and reports using the principles of composition,
including rhetorical grammar and usage, critical thinking, basic principles of
argumentation, accurate documentation using APA style.
