PROPERTIES OF MATTER

PHYSICAL PROPERTY

• Is a characteristic that can be observed and measured without changing the identity and composition of the
substance. Ex: Hardness, Color, Conductivity, Malleability, Melting Point, Boiling Point
• Basically, properties you notice when using one of your five senses:
Feel - mass, volume, texture
Sight - color
Hear
Smell
Taste

CHEMICAL PROPERTY

• Refers to the ability of a substance to undergo changes to transform into a different substance.
• It describes how a substance reacts with another substance.
Ex: Burn, rot, rust, decompose, ferment, explode, corrode

Examples:

 Melting point-PHYSICAL

 Flammability-CHEMICAL

 Magnetic-PHYSICAL

 Conductivity-PHYSICAL

 Tarnishes in air-CHEMICAL

PHYSICAL CHANGE

• Properties of the material or Physical appearance changes but its composition remains unchanged.

CHEMICAL CHANGE

• When a substance undergoes changes in its composition.

• One or more substances are converted into different
substances.
• The COMPOSITION of matter ALWAYS changes
• Also called a chemical reaction

REACTANTS
• Substances that transform or undergo chemical reaction.
PRODUCTS
• Substances that are formed.
EVIDENCES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS:
1. Change in odor.

2. Change in color. Ex. Silver when tarnished, turns into yellowish

tint to deep yellow and even black.

3. Evolution of gas.

4. Formation of precipitate.

5. Evolution of light and heat.

6. Change in temperature or energy.

7. change of form
CLASSIFYING PROPERTIES OF MATTER

• Length
• Mass
• Size
• Volume
• Weight
