FERNANDO AMORSOLO

 Born on May 20, 1892


 From Calle Herran in Paco, Manila
 Son of Pedro Amorsolo (bookkeeper) and Bonifacia Cueto
Worked as:
1. Instructor
2. Draftsman for the Public Works
3. Illustrator for Children’s books and magazines
4. Director

 His styles of paintings were: Impressionism, Luminism and Realism


 His known works are the Dalagang Filipina (1937), landscapes, and World War II scenes.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT
World War II scenes - was painted during the Japanese Occupation
- His paintings were greatly affected with the hardships and sufferings of the
Filipinos on the arrival of the Japanese.

 He was able to depict and create art out of the chaos of war.
 Amorsolo channeled the traumatic moments into creative energy and captured history as it
unfolded before his eyes.
 Dark shades of his paintings symbolize dark experiences during this time.

JUAN NOVICIO LUNA


 Was born in October 23, 1857 in Badoc, Ilocos, Philippines.
 He was the third of Don Joaquin Luna de San Pedro y Posadas and Doña Laureana Novicio y
Ancheta.
 He excelled in painting and drawing, and was influenced by his brother, Manuel Luna.

CONTENT ANALYSIS
 The Spolarium depicts an event during the Roman empire, where gladiators die for
entertainment.
 The painting shows how gladiators are being dragged mercilessly by men towards an unknown
darkness, where other tragically killed gladiators are brought.
 To the left is a cheering crowd, screaming for blood while to the right, a woman is crouched and
seemingly in sorrow.
 Shows a tragic event during the Spanish Colonization
 Fallen gladiator
 Men dragging them to the darkness
 The woman crouched on the right side
 The bloody thirsty crowd to the left

The painting of Juan Luna depicted the life of the Filipinos during the Spanish colonization.
We can say that the elements on the painting symbolizes the following.

The woman crouched on the right side- the inang bayan who weeps for her country
The bloody thirsty crowd to the left – representation of the social cancer at the time

 Gives sense of pride for us Filipinos having an extraordinary artist like Juan Luna.
 It lets us value nationalism.
