Activity 3

I. What rule of inference is used in each of these arguments?

1) Archie is a Mathematics major student. Therefore, Archie is either a Mathematics major or
a Chemistry major.
ADDITION

2) If it is rainy, then the gate will be closed. It is rainy. Therefore, the gate is closed.

MODUS PONENS

3) If it floods today, the university will close. The university is not closed today. Therefore, it
did not flood today.

MODUS TOLLENS

II. Consider the following information below:

32 + 1 = 10
52 + 1 = 26
72 + 1= 50
92 + 1 = 82

(a) Make a possible conjecture of the given information. You can give more than one
conjecture.

1. The sum of the squares of an odd number and 1 is divisible by 2.

2. The sum of the squares of all given information added by 1 is divisible by 2.
(b) Give a counterexample of your conjecture in (a). (if there is any)
1. There’s NO COUNTEREXAMPLE. All numbers were valid.

III. Word Problem. Show your neat and complete solutions, if necessary.

1) Consider the sequence 2, 5, 10, 17, 26, .... What is the next term?

ANSWER: 37

The next term is 37. The difference of the given sequence is 3, 5, 7, 9. And the difference
between 3, 5, 7, 9, is 2, then add 9+2 and the answer will be 11. For finding the next term,
add 11 to the last given term which is 26, so the answer for the next term will be 37.

2) A family had dinner in a restaurant and paid Php1,500 for food. They also had to pay
9.5% sales tax and 10% for the tip. How much did they pay for the dinner?

10+9.5 = 19.5%
19.5% = 0.195

1500*0.195 = PHP 292.50 (With the added Tax and Tips)

1500 + 292.50 = PHP 1792.50 is the final payment for the dinner

3) The sum of the three consecutive integers is 255. What are the values of these integers?

(X) + (X + 1) + (X + 2) = 255

X + X + 1 + X + 2 = 255

3X + 3 = 255

3X + 3 - 3 = 255 - 3

3X = 252

3X/3 = 252/3

X = 84

84 + 1 = 85 84 + 2 = 86
The consecutive integers that add up to 255 are 84, 85, and 86.

4) Find the sides of a rectangle if the length is 3 less than the width. The perimeter of the
rectangle is 54 inches.

LET,

x = sides of rectangle

x - 3 = 54

3x/3 = 54/3

x = 18 sides of rectangle

18*3 = 54
