Quarter 1- Module 1:
Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies
KEY MESSAGE

For Educators:
Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) is one of the basic subjects in the
implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program composed of four
components namely, Agri - Fishery, Home Economics, Industrial Arts and
Information Communication Technology. In this module, the focus is on Home
Economics Course - Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies.
According to George Washington Carver, “Education is the key to unlock the
golden door of freedom”; thus, the Department of Education extends their resources
and finds alternative ways to address your needs and to adapt to the new normal of
the educational system as a bridge to Learning Continuity Plan. To address such
needs, the teacher-made learning modules are crafted.
You are reading the Cookery-Grade 9: First Quarter Alternative Delivery Mode
(ADM) Module on “Assess Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies” as written
based on the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum. This course is designed for high
school students to develop knowledge, skills, and attitude in the performance of
cookery tasks.
Through the combined efforts of expert and competent educators from various
levels and schools in the Department of Education - Division of Cebu Province, this
module is created for your convenience. Despite all physical, social and economic
restraints in the current teaching scenarios, this module came out after a thorough
planning, organization, editing and verification of the development team in order to
cater all the needs of our diverse learners.
This module will surely help our teachers and learners in the midst of the
challenges brought by the pandemic. The learners are given independent learning
activities which are anchored on the competencies based on the K-12 Curriculum
Guide, thus engaging them to work at their own pace within the comforts of their own
homes. This will gear them in acquiring the prerequisite 21st Century skills that will
adequately prepare them for work, start a business, acquire middle level skills and
continue to higher education.
Therefore, your topmost priority is to explain clearly on how our learners will use
this module. You are to ensure that the learner‟s progress and development will be
monitored and their strengths and weaknesses will be appropriately assessed while
doing independently the activities in each part of the module. Moreover, you
consistently provide feedback to the learning facilitators about the progress of the
learners and encourage, as well, the learners to comply and to finish the modules on
time.
For the Learners:
The Department of Education researched and explored innovative ways to
address your needs with high consideration on social, economic, physical and
emotional aspects of your well-being. To continue the learning process, DepEd
comes up with an Alternative Delivery mode of teaching using Teacher-Made

ENTREPINOY
Directions: Based on the story pick up the words/characteristics that make the
Filipino entrepreneurs successful. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

1. MR. TONY TAN CAKTIONG

Tony Tan Caktiong‟s Jollibee has been one of the most admired, most copied,
most innovative and most professionally-run company here in the Philippines. It has
been the number one fast food chain overtaking giants such as Mc Donald‟s and
Kentucky Fried Chicken or KFC. By the month of May, with his family savings, he
took P350,000 to grab the franchise opportunity and opened two Magnolia ice cream
parlors named Cubao Ice Cream House located near the Coronet Theater, and
Quiapo Ice Cream House located beside the bridge – the one going to ilalim – near a
Mercury Drug outlet. They all worked hands-on for the business.

2. MR. HENRY SY
Henry Sy is the richest man in the Philippines. The retail magnate who owns all
established 33 SM Malls and also a banking magnate who owns Banco De Oro-
EPCI Bank and majority share in China Bank. Let‟s learn and be inspired from
another successful entrepreneur story as his daughter Teresita Sy-Coson narrates
the story of his father‟s success:

Our company, SM, as many of you may already know, came from the hard work of
my dad, Henry Sy, Sr. His determination, his discipline and his thriftiness have
produced an astute and street smart businessman who has influenced a lot of
people. Including us, his children.

My father‟s perseverance during the different crises our country has gone through
has made our active business pursuits possible for a half century. True, he was
disappointed with the economy many times, but he never saw the reason to quit and
instead pursued his goals relentlessly.

He was continuously learning from his customers, suppliers, and employees. This
on-the-job research gave him enough confidence to expand to a department store
chain. Many things in life grow out of needs, and to meet the needs, you become
determined. With determination you will take extra challenges and do things
differently – which will most likely bring success.

3
3. MS. SOCORRO RAMOS
National Book Store, the Philippine‟s largest chain of bookstores is the featured
success story for today as we witness the life story of the woman behind it, Socorro
Ramos or more commonly known to her staffs as Nanay Coring.

Her story is truly an inspiring one as she built the business National Book Store
from scratch with a lot of challenges and hurdles as she and her husband Jose
Ramos literally built and rebuilt the business three times from scratch. That‟s the true
entrepreneurial spirit with enough courage and determination.

to get the ingredients needed until she gets the cooking done.

food stall in her place in the next two months. She also wanted that her signature
products will be patented.

online so that others will know. Mary then consulted other people who are doing
online business in line with her products and how to go about it.

___________8. Having acquired the patented products and posted in her online
facebook page, Mary carefully planned on placing online and offline orders of
customers so that the goods will be delivered on time. She also has an inventory and
monitoring of the ingredients and materials needed so that she will not be short for
product orders.

WHAT IS IT

Entrepreneur
An entrepreneur is comprehensively defined by Zimmerer & Scarborough
(2005) as someone who “creates a new business in the face of risk and uncertainty
for the purpose of achieving profit and growth by identifying significant opportunities
and assembling the necessary resources to capitalize on them”. They are the ones
who act on their business ideas.
Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies
There have been many studies to characterize “the entrepreneurial
personality”; although there is no isolated set of traits that guarantee success, there
were identified behaviors found common to most successful entrepreneurs. There is
a well-known research on human behavior done by McClelland and McBer which
identified 10 behavioral patterns organized into three general clusters: the
achievement, planning, and power clusters (SERDEF, 2007; 1998). It was found out
that these behaviors were also typical entrepreneurial behaviors. The entrepreneurial

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

PEC’s Scoring Sheet

Directions: Please enter your ratings in the PECs scoring sheet, borrowed from
Liberal (2007). The number in parenthesis corresponds to the questionnaire item
number. Notice that the item numbers are listed consecutively for each column.
Perform the addition and subtraction as indicated in each row to compute for each
PEC. Use another sheet of short bond paper.

9
The PECs Scoring Sheet with Correction Factor

The Correction Factor, still taken from Liberal (2007), is used to provide a
more accurate assessment of the PECs of each respondent. If the total score of
items 11, 22, 33, 44, and 55 is 20 or greater, then the total score on the ten PECs
must be corrected. Use the table below to determine the corrected score.
If the correct factor is: Subtract number from each PECs score
24 or 25 7
22 or 23 5
20 or 21 3
19 or less 0

10
Correct each PECs score before using the Profile Sheet

WHAT I CAN DO

Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECs) Profile Sheet

Directions: Transfer the corrected PECs score to the profile sheet, still borrowed
from Liberal (2007), by marking an “X” at the appropriate point on the horizontal line
provided for each PEC category. After plotting your PECs score, connect all the “Xs”
with a heavy line. Use a short-size bond paper.

11
SAMPLE PECs PROFILE

Interpretation
A lower score means a „weak‟ performance and a higher score translates to a
„strong‟ performance on a particular competency. A „weak‟ performance should be
regarded as a challenge or an opportunity for improvement rather than a cause for
worry. Improving a competency entails enough determination, correct practice and
strategies, and time for maturation.

12
