stress ed e xces sive ly. Mo reover , fo llow-up stud ies s ho wed th at toot h mobility decreas es
afte r remova l o f fun ctio nnl d iso rd er s o f the masti cator y sy~ t c m o r an imm oh ilisa t in n
of sp linted tee th . A n experi mental traum a o f the pcr iodontul ligam en t a lso b rings
o n an increased too th mo bi lity wh ich decreases to th e ori gina l values so me da ys a fte r

T he periodon tal ligam ent assu me s the fun cti on o f tran s mitt ing co mp res s ive s tre ng th
; ca used by m asti cat ion int o ten sile s tre ngt h actin g o n th e alveo lar bo ne . Bes ides . th e
per iod o nta l ligament is of great importan ce I'l l!' the co nt ro l o f ma sticat o ry force s. In
o rder to accomp lish t he two ta sks . a perfect fun ct io ning o f th e periodo n ta l tiss ue s is
requried . In this con nec tio n too th mobi lity is an impo rta n t parame ter for d e te rm in ing
the fun ction al co nd itio n o f thc per iodon ta l ligam e nt.
