AFFECTING REACTION RATES
Republic Act 8293, section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in any
work of the Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the
government agency or office wherein the work is created shall be necessary for
exploitation of such work for profit. Such agency or office may, among other things,

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Do you know why coffee dissolves faster in hot water than in cold water?
Chemical reactions take place at different rates. Some happen instantly while others take longer time to
react.
Chemical reactions are affected by the following factors: particle size or surface area of the reactants,
temperature, presence of catalyst, and concentration of reactants.
MELC: Explain how the factors affecting reaction rates of chemical reactions are applied in food preservation
and materials production, control of fire, pollution and corrosion. (S10MTIV-j-24)
OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the factors affecting reaction rates.
2. Give real-life examples of reactions and identify the factors affecting them.
III. ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 2. Match the items in column A with the factors in column B. Write only the letter of your answer.

decrease) the reaction rate.
b. The reaction rate __________(increases, decreases) with a decrease in temperature.
c. Catalysts __________(slow down, speed up) reaction rates.
d. When the concentration of reactants are raised, the reaction proceeds more __________ ( slowly,
quickly)

Activation energy is needed to break the bond between reactant molecules to form new bonds leading
to formation of the products.
What are the factors affecting reaction rates?
Rate of reaction refers to how quickly or slowly a reactant turns into a product.
Chemical reactions are affected by the following factors: particle size/ surface area of reactants,
temperature, presence of catalyst, and concentration of reactants.
Effect of particle size or surface area
When solids and liquids react, increasing the surface area of the solid will increase the reaction rate. A
decrease in particle size causes an increase in the solid’s total surface area.
The solid molecules trapped within the body of the solid cannot react. Therefore increasing the surface
area of the solid will expose more solid molecules to the liquid, which allows for a faster reaction.
Effect of temperature
Raising the reaction temperature by 10 0C can double or triple the reaction rate. This is due to an
increase in the number of particles that have the minimum energy required. The reaction rate decreases with
a decrease in temperature.
Catalysts are substances that increase reaction rate by lowering the activation energy needed for the
reaction to occur.
Catalyst can lower the activation energy and increase the reaction rate without being consumed in the
reaction.
For example, at ordinary conditions, H2 and O2 do not combine. However, they do combine in the
presence of a small quantity of platinum, which acts as a catalyst, and the reaction then occurs rapidly.
Effects of concentration of reactants
When the concentrations of reactants are raised, the reaction proceeds more quickly. This is due to
an increase in the number of molecules that have the minimum energy required. For gases, increasing
pressure has the same effect as increasing concentration.

D. APPLICATION
Answer the following questions:
1. Why do you think food spoil faster when they are not refrigerated? How does refrigeration help in
preserving food?
2. Why do we chop the meat and other ingredients before coking them?
