LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Science 10 Quarter 4 Week 7

Section:_____________________________________________Score:__________________

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Do you know why coffee dissolves faster in hot water than in cold water?
Chemical reactions take place at different rates. Some happen instantly while others take longer time to
react.
Chemical reactions are affected by the following factors: particle size or surface area of the reactants,
temperature, presence of catalyst, and concentration of reactants.

II. LEARNING SKILLS

MELC: Explain how the factors affecting reaction rates of chemical reactions are applied in food preservation
and materials production, control of fire, pollution and corrosion. (S10MTIV-j-24)

OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the factors affecting reaction rates.
2. Give real-life examples of reactions and identify the factors affecting them.

III. ACTIVITIES

A. ACTIVITY 1. Identify whether each statement is true or false.

1. Coffee dissolves faster in hot water than in cold water.

2. Rock salt reacts faster than iodized salt.
3. A catalyst slows down chemical reaction.
4. Higher concentration of reactants will mean faster reaction rates.
5. Smaller particles react faster than bigger particles.

ACTIVITY 2. Match the items in column A with the factors in column B. Write only the letter of your answer.
A B
Activities Factors affecting chemical reactions
_____ 1. Using papaya to tenderize chicken meat in A. temperature
cooking tinola
_____ 2. Cutting meat into smaller pieces before B. concentration of reactants
cooking them
_____ 3. Woods are chopped into smaller pieces C. particle size/surface area of reactants

prescribed dosage by the physician

B. ANALYSIS
Answer the following questions:
1. Based on Activity 1A and 1B, what are the factors affecting reaction rates? Write them below:

2. Fill-in the blanks in the following statements with the correct terms, choose your answers from the words
enclosed in the parentheses.

a. When solids and liquids react, increasing the surface area of the solid will __________ (increase,
decrease) the reaction rate.
b. The reaction rate __________(increases, decreases) with a decrease in temperature.
c. Catalysts __________(slow down, speed up) reaction rates.
d. When the concentration of reactants are raised, the reaction proceeds more __________ ( slowly,
quickly)
e. For gases increasing pressure means __________( increasing, decreasing) the rate of reaction.

C. ABSTRACTION

What is collision theory? What does it say about chemical reaction?

Collision theory explains how collision between reactant molecules may or may not result in a successful
chemical reaction.
Based on this theory, not all collisions between the molecules result in the formation of products. Effective
collisions between molecules, which result in the formation of products, only occur when the following two
conditions are met:
(a) the colliding molecules should possess a minimum kinetic energy, known as activation energy, to start
a chemical reaction.
(b) the reactant molecules should be in correct orientation when they collide.

Figure 1. Effective and ineffective collisions
Activation energy is needed to break the bond between reactant molecules to form new bonds leading
to formation of the products.
What are the factors affecting reaction rates?
Rate of reaction refers to how quickly or slowly a reactant turns into a product.
Chemical reactions are affected by the following factors: particle size/ surface area of reactants,
temperature, presence of catalyst, and concentration of reactants.
Effect of particle size or surface area
When solids and liquids react, increasing the surface area of the solid will increase the reaction rate. A
decrease in particle size causes an increase in the solid’s total surface area.
The solid molecules trapped within the body of the solid cannot react. Therefore increasing the surface
area of the solid will expose more solid molecules to the liquid, which allows for a faster reaction.

Effect of temperature
Raising the reaction temperature by 10 0C can double or triple the reaction rate. This is due to an
increase in the number of particles that have the minimum energy required. The reaction rate decreases with
a decrease in temperature.

Catalysts are substances that increase reaction rate by lowering the activation energy needed for the
reaction to occur.
Catalyst can lower the activation energy and increase the reaction rate without being consumed in the
reaction.
For example, at ordinary conditions, H2 and O2 do not combine. However, they do combine in the
presence of a small quantity of platinum, which acts as a catalyst, and the reaction then occurs rapidly.
Effects of concentration of reactants
When the concentrations of reactants are raised, the reaction proceeds more quickly. This is due to
an increase in the number of molecules that have the minimum energy required. For gases, increasing
pressure has the same effect as increasing concentration.

preserving food?
2. Why do we chop the meat and other ingredients before coking them?
