SWOT Analysis
What is SWOT Analysis?
● SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis is a
method for identifying and analyzing internal strengths and weaknesses
and external opportunities and threats that shape current and future
operations and help develop strategic goals.
● Internal Factors:
○ Positive factor → Strengths
○ Negative factor → Weaknesses
○ It's in your business and can be controlled

● External Factors:
○ Positive factor → Opportunities
○ Negative factor → Threats
○ It is outside your business and cannot be controlled
Why is SWOT Analysis Used?
● SWOT analysis is used to get more information about all aspects of a
problem, team, individual or other entity.
● They use swot analysis BEFORE THEY SET TEAM OR ORGANIZATIONAL
GOALS to ensure they are working towards the appropriate achievements.
● This type of evaluation can be used in a variety of situations. Here are
some examples of when a SWOT analysis can be useful:
○ When deciding on a new recruit
○ When designing a new product
○ When reviewing individual, team or group performance
○ When evaluating the audience or market
○ When analyzing products for improvement
○ When analyzing processes for inefficiencies
Strengths
● What advantages does your company or business have?
● What makes your company or organization better than any other company
or business?
● What is unique about your company or business?
○ Toms Shoes is a shoe manufacturer. Again, there is nothing especially unique
about that. But Toms Shoes' unique selling point is that for every pair of shoes a
customer purchases, the company donates a pair to a child in need.

● What causes your company to get sales?

● What do your customers see or feel as an advantage?
Weaknesses
● What can you improve in your company or business?
● What should your company avoid?
● What do consumers see or feel as a weakness of your company or
business?
● What are competitors doing to make them better than your
company or business?
Opportunities
● What opportunities can you see?
● What trends are in line with your company or business?

Threats
● What obstacles are you facing right now?
● What are the competitors doing your company or business?
● What technological developments pose a threat to your company
or business?
● Are there changes in government regulations that will threaten
the development of your company or business?
How to Do a SWOT Analysis?
1. Define clearly the subject you are analyzing e.g. sales team
performance in January, new product launching, etc.
2. Draw a SWOT Framework:
TOWS Matrix
The TOWS matrix is a continuation of the SWOT analysis. For each combination
of internal and external factors, consider how you can use them to create sound
strategic options:
● Strengths and Opportunities (SO)
○ How can you use your strengths to take advantage of this
opportunity?
● Strengths and Threats (ST)
○ How can you leverage your strengths to avoid real and potential
threats?
● Weaknesses and Opportunities (WO)
○ How can you use your opportunities to overcome your weaknesses?
● Weaknesses and Threats (WT)
○ How can you minimize your weaknesses and avoid threats?

Assessing
Business Model
Combining SWOT and BMC
How to Assess a Business Model?
● An effective way to assess a business model is to combine SWOT analysis
and BMC.
● SWOT aims to help identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats of the 9 elements of BMC.
● Evaluation of the results of the SWOT analysis aims to formulate a value
proposition, business model, and explore new customer segments from
your BMC.
● The method:
1. Set up your business BMC,
2. Analysis based on SWOT,
3. Create new BMC based on SWOT analysis
