THE 20-HOUR PER WEEK
SCHEDULE FOR CAT PREP.
CAT 2022 Notification is out now. If you’re planning on taking CAT this year,
starting from August, you’ll need a solid game plan to prepare for the
exam diligently. There were many factors that helped me do well last year,
but the most critical aspect was, quite simply, consistency in devoting
some time to my CAT prep every day, without fail.

To nail the exam requires this ingredient in no small proportions, which is

why I hope that this schedule I used helps you ace CAT.

THE 20-HOUR PER WEEK
SCHEDULE FOR CAT PREP.
Assuming that you’re starting on July 31st, you have 4 months to prepare;
this timeframe is ample to crack 99+% ile easily, if you follow this template
for your week, without fail:

The first step for you should be to simply take a mock ; no matter how
prepared/unprepared you feel, I think you need to assess your current
standing with the test and see which area will need the most
improvement.

Next, you should try to follow this schedule, without fail, after your first
mock

Day-wise Schedule for the entire week

Sunday 2 hr mock + 4hr analysis

Monday 2 more hours of analysis

Tuesday 2 hr QA

Wednesday 2hr DILR

Thursday 2 hr VARC

Friday 3 sectional tests (2 VARC, 1 DILR) 2 hrs

Saturday 3 sectional tests (1DILR, 2 QA) 2 hrs

SCHEDULE FOR CAT PREP.
Let’s explore each element:

Why 6 additional hours of analysis for a 2 hour mock?

1. In the initial stages of your prep, you should focus more on building
concepts and fundamental knowledge. Taking 6 hours (i.e: 2 hours per
section) to do this offers you the opportunity to:

a. Solve the questions you could not attempt.

Doing this is mandatory. If you left the question due to lack of

knowledge/time, open your book/material to the page where the concept
is explained, make sense of the concepts, and try solving again.

If you can’t, look at the solution, compare it to the “bookish” knowledge of

the material, and try once more.

Don’t think about the fact that you are not here in your syllabus coverage
yet; CAT problems test your understanding as a whole, not just
verbal/quant/puzzle solving.

b. Re-attempt the questions you solved wrongly.

The aim should be to see where you went wrong. So, a pro-tip: do your
rough work in such a way that you can understand it later when you are
working on your mock analysis.

If you made a silly mistake, I don’t need to give you any advice, except to
forgive yourself and move on!

In case it is a conceptual error, do the same as you would for an
unattempted question (detailed earlier).

c. For the correctly solved ones:

Compare your technique with the provided solution, and see if there is a
faster way to do it.

Most mock test analysis windows will tell you about how much time the
top test-takers need to solve a particular question; if you’re slower, the
step above becomes all the more necessary.

2. After doing all of the good work on Sunday and Monday, start covering up
your material. Now, you can shuffle up material coverage between
Tuesday to Thursday as per your preference, but don’t take the next step I
outline before covering some new material.

3. After doing some learning, take sectional tests on Friday and Saturday.
These tests help you learn about the specific strategies of a section alone,
instead of using the energy for a full mock. Here is where you experiment
and try out any new concepts/tricks you’ve learned.

Basically, you’re open here to make as many crazy choices about your
strategy as possible, so that you’ll know what works for you before taking
the next week’s mock on Sunday.
THE 20-HOUR PER WEEK
SCHEDULE FOR CAT PREP.
Now that we have a weekly template, let’s look at what your 4 months will
look like:

Overall:

Total hours = 20*4*4 = 320 hrs

Mocks + Analysis = 8*4*4 = 128 hours

Remaining = 192 hrs

Sectionals = 4*4*4 = 64 hrs

Remaining = 128 hours --> Material coverage for all three sections
- Roughly 40-42 hours - good enough

Sectional syllabi can be covered at this time. In fact, depending on which

section you are strong in, you can accordingly adjust your time.

How many mocks will you end up taking: Now, given that you will do mocks
for 128 hours, you will do a minimum of 16 mocks. However, I took a mock on
Saturday and Sunday during my prep after September, bringing up my
total to 25 mocks. I tried to never compromise on the analysis part, as that
is what allowed me to improve every week.

You can mix and match the basic blocks among the week, except Mocks.
Try to take them on Sunday only, since CAT is a Sunday test.

SCHEDULE FOR CAT PREP.
Now, why this works:

Not a taxing routine, even for working professionals (provided you don't
miss a slot).

By the time October came around, I was done with QA and VARC
syllabus. So, I either used that time for sectional tests or tried to revise
anything I wasn't comfortable with.

In my last week of prep, I knew I’d done enough, and I did not solve any
mocks all week, except one a day before the test. I think the reset
allowed me to do as well as I did, and the only reason I could chill off was
that I was confident in my strategy and efforts by then.
