Separating the components
of a mixture.
Fill half a beaker with water put a
watch glass on the mouth of the beaker.
Then put few drops of INK on the
watch glass. Now, start HEATING the
beaker. We will see that Evaporation is
taking place from the watch glass.
Continue HEATING as the Evaporation
goes on and stop HEATING when you
do not see any further change on the
watch glass. We find that INK is a
mixture of a dye in WATER. Thus, we
can separate the volatile component
[solvent] from its Non-Volatile solute
by the method of Evaporation
How can we separate Cream
from Milk [Centrifugation].

Take some full-cream milk in a test tube.

Centrifugate it by using a centrifuging machine
for 2 minutes. If a centrifuging machine is not
available, you can do this activity at home by
using a Milk Churner.
Sometimes, the solid particles in a liquid mixture
are very small and thus easily pass through a Filter
Paper. Such particles cannot be separated by
Filtration. Such mixtures are separated by
Centrifugation.
This technique is based upon the principle that
when a mixture is separated is rotated at a high
speed, the lighter particles stay on the surface
of the liquid while the heavier particles are
forced to the bottom of liquid.
How can we separate a mixture of
TWO IMMISCIBLE LIQUIDS ?
Let us separate a mixture of Kerosene Oil
and Water.
Pour the mixture of Kerosene Oil and Water
in a separating funnel.
The separating funnel is then allowed to
stand for sometime when Kerosene Oil and
Water.
The Kerosene Oil being lighter than water
forms the upper layer while Water being
heavier forms the lower layer.
Now place the BEAKER below the funnel
and open the stopcock and the lower layer of
Water is run out carefully.
Close the stopcock of the funnel as soon as
the Oil Layer reaches the stopcock.
How can we separate a mixture
of two Miscible Liquids ?
Let us separate Acetone and Water
from their mixture.
Take the mixture in a Distillation
Tank. Fit it with a thermometer.
Heat the mixture slowly keeping a
close watch at the thermometer.
This method is called Distillation. It is The Acetone vaporises, condenses
used for the separation of components of in the condenser and can be
a mixture containing two miscible collected from the condenser outlet.
liquids that boil without decomposition
and have sufficient difference in their Water is left behind in the
Boiling Points. Distillation Flask.
How can we obtain pure
Copper Sulphate from an
Impure Sample?

Take about 5g of impure sample of Copper

Sulphate in a China dish and dissolve it in
minimum amount of water.
The solution is then filtered to remove suspended
impurities. Thereafter, the filtrate is evaporated
in a China dish so as to get a Saturated Solution.
The hot saturated solution thus obtained is
allowed to stand undisturbed for a few hours
when crystals of pure Copper Sulphate separates
out.
These crystals are separated by Filtration through
an ordinary funnel.
This process is called Crystallisation.
