MARK TWAIN

Mark Twain, one of the most famous American writers, was born in Missouri, USA in 1835. His
real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He had to leave school at the age of 12 because his
father died and Samuel had to work to help support his family. He had many different jobs in
his life before he became a professional writer. He worked as a river boat pilot, a journalist and
a travel writer, among other things.

In 1862, when he started working as a journalist for a newspaper, he decided to use another
name. 'Mark Twain' is actually a word that people who work on river boats use to check how
deep the water is and he remembered it from when he was a pilot.

In 1870 Mark Twain married Olivia Langdon, the sister of his friend Charles Langdon. He saw her
picture when he was travelling with Charles in the Mediterranean and immediately fell in love
with her! When he finally met her in New York he loved her even more and they got married.

Twain's stories became popular all over the world with people of all ages. Many important
people admired him and the famous British writer Rudyard Kipling said that he came all the way
from India to meet Mark Twain! Mark Twain earned a lot of money writing but he spent it all.
At the end of his life he had to go on tours giving talks to support himself.

Two of Twain's most famous books are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn. They are books about two young adventurous boys living in a small town on
the Mississippi River in the 19th century. Mark Twain used the stories to show many of the
things that he found to be wrong in America at that time. Unfortunately, some of those
problems still exist today.
