CHEMISTRY
What’s really in a PAINT CAN?
Essentially, a paint consists
of a PIGMENT, dispersed
in a BINDER , and reduced
with SOLVENT as transfer
medium.

One or more ADDITIVES

may be incorporated to
modify the paint film’s
properties.

@boysenpaintsphilippines
Paint Components
PIGMENTS
imparts color and hiding properties

Primary Pigments
(e.g. Titanium Dioxide)

provides color and opacity

organic/inorganic

Secondary Pigments
(e.g. CaCO3, talc, silica, clay)

fillers or extenders

gives bulk at low cost

@boysenpaintsphilippines
Paint Components
BINDER
forms the paint film and
provides adhesion onto the substrate

Alkyd

for wood and metal substrates

dries by oxidation
Thermoplastic Acrylic

for concrete, wood, and metal
substrates

dries by solvent evaporation
Latex/Emulsion

for concrete substrates

dries by coalescence

@boysenpaintsphilippines
Paint Components
SOLVENT
provides ease of application
and controls viscosity of the paint

liquid component that
evaporates as the paint
dries

also provides good flow
and level during paint
application

can be either water-based
or solvent-based
(petroleum)

Examples of Additives:

driers

defoamers

preservatives

dispersant

Paint Classification

Water-based – coalescence
Solvent Acrylic – hybrid
Alkyd-based – oxidation
Lacquer – solvent evaporation
Epoxy & Polyurethane – cross-
linking

*Drywall (e.g., Gypsum
Board / Ficem Board)
*as per board manufacturer’s
standard

@boysenpaintsphilippines
New Masonry
✓Let dry for 14 to 28 days before painting.
✓Apply concrete neutralizer.
✓Let dry overnight.
✓Sand surface to remove white crystals and
other contaminants adhering to the surface.

@boysenpaintsphilippines
Skimcoat Plastering
✓Interior or Exterior use
✓Curing Time
✓Paint Compatibility
✓Required Preparation

@boysenpaintsphilippines
Repainting
✓Remove loose, blistering and scaling paint.
✓Treat any mold or fungi infection using a
fungicidal wash solution or household bleach
solution (1:3 with water).
✓Check paint compatibility.
✓For chalking old latex paint, use surface
conditioner.

@boysenpaintsphilippines
WOOD
✓Only use kiln dried wood.
✓Seal stained wood.
✓Sand rough wood until smooth.
✓Countersink nail heads for putty
application.
✓Dust off surfaces and wipe with a
clean rag.

@boysenpaintsphilippines
NEW METAL
✓Wipe surface with rag
soaked in paint thinner
✓Etch the surface with rust
converter
✓For hard to adhere
surfaces (i.e., new G.I.,
aluminum and stainless
steel): use special primer

@boysenpaintsphilippines
RUSTED STEEL
✓Scrape rust by wire
brushing and then sand
thoroughly.
✓Apply rust converter on
stubborn rust only.
✓Let stay for about 10 to 15
minutes.
✓Wash thoroughly with clean
water.
✓Solvent wipe using
thinners.
✓Let dry then immediately
@boysenpaintsphilippines
apply primer.

Painting System
1. Primer/Sealer – intercoat
adhesion/bonding,
hiding/opacity (e.g. colored
primers)
2. Putty/Filler (optional) –
full/spot putty, minor surface
imperfections
3. Texture (optional)
4. Topcoat – 2 to 3 coats (in-
between layer =
intermediate coat), color,
sheen, finish
