Unity as Transcendental
Property of Being
New Question. Equipped now with the flexible tools o f analogous con
cepts to carry out our metaphysical search, we are ready to pursue fur
ther our inquiry into what it means to be. We have already seen in
chapter 2 that to be a real being means to be actively present to the com
munity of other real existents. Self-communicating, self-expressive action is,
therefore, the first transcendental property of real being as such that we
have discovered. By transcendental property of being is meant an attribute
that can be truly predicated of every real being, precisely insofar as it is
a real existent. But activity is the outer face of being, so to speak, the way
it expresses itself to others. We are now drawn to look more deeply into
the inner structure of every being to see what constitutes it as such, so
that without it nothing can qualifY as real. What first reveals itself to our
reflection is the property of unity. Every being, to be a being, must be
in ternally one, must cohere together to form an undivided whole, or it
cannot be at all. So absolutely central is this attribute that it is agreed
upon by metaphysicians of every tradition , whatever else they may dis
agree on.

The unity we are talking about here i s not numerical unity, that is, "one"
as the first in a number series, but some thing intrinsic within every
being, called ontological unity. It is difficult to define it positively, since it

whose parts are extrinsic to each other. " This is not true of any real
being, any intrinsic unity.
Criteria for Distinguishing Intrinsicfrom Extrinsic Unity. The basic cri
terion is always th e sam e : whether the datum we are trying to under
stand manifests by its action that it acts as a unit, from a single controlling
center of action. But it is not always easy to discern the difference by mere
observation from without, nor by any scientific measuring process. You
can ' t point with your finger to the exact location of the center of unity
and action in a body, since it pervades the whole being at once. It can
only be discerned by an ac t of intellectual reflection on the evidence
and an interpretative judgment, which may be mistaken.
There is, however, one crucial test that can often-not always-be
applied, namely, if parts are removed from the whole being examined,
do these continue to act in the same way, exhibit the same properties
outside the whole as they did inside? If the former, the unity is extrinsic;
if the latter, it is intrinsic. For example, take an airplane and a bird: if you
remove the parts of an airplane, its steel, plastic, wood, cushions, etc . ,
they continue t o exhibit the same properties outside a s inside and can
be put together again in the proper order to reconstitute the plane. Try
the same with a bird: remove the head and wings, and they immediately
become lifeless, turn into lower chemicals with quite different proper
ties; the bird dies and the dead parts cannot be put together again to
reform the living bird. The same with computers, all machines. Simi
larly, with stones, which not only children but many n on-scie n tific
grown-ups even today naively assume to be single real beings. Chip off
pieces, and they continue to exhibit the same chemical properties by
themselves; but once you reach the level of molecules and break these
down i n to atoms, the active properties of these parts dramatically
change into quite different ones. This is a sign that you have reached
the highest level of intrinsic unities within the extrinsic unity of the
complex we call a stone.
This criterion is a clear one when it can be applied. But it obviously
cannot be applied when the members of a large system-even when
recognized as in trinsic unities ( e . g . , humans) -can n ot be removed
from the system and still survive. Thus, if we are trying to judge whether
our whole universe is an intrinsic or extrinsic unity, we cannot remove
parts such as ourselves outside the universe as a whole, since the latter
is all-inclusive and there is no outside to it. How then do we know the
