“Is it possible for the UAE to use only

renewable energy resources?”

The UAE as a country uses lots of energy and a portion of it is renewable, renewable energy is
energy that is made from Earth’s natural resources like sunlight, wind, water, animal waste, and
plants. 44% of the energy in the UAE is renewable some of the renewable energy sources that
the UAE uses include solar energy, hydroelectric energy and wind energy (International Trade
Administration, 2020). Solar energy comes from sunlight and is usually collected with solar
panels, which then convert the sunlight into energy (Sunpower), this makes using solar energy in
the UAE a great idea because of the fact that the UAE gets an average of 12 hours of sunlight
every day (Weather & Climate, 2019). Hydroelectric energy comes from water sources like dams
and rivers. Hydroelectric energy works because the water gains potential energy which is then
converted into kinetic energy and that kinetic energy is used to power things (National
Geographic, 2019). Wind energy is clearly powered by wind, and similarly to hydroelectric
energy, wind turbines spin and generate kinetic energy (IRENA).

Non-renewable energy is energy that will eventually run out and is bad for the environment.
Some commonly used non-renewable energy sources include coal, oil, natural gas, crude oil,
uranium, phosphate, steel and nuclear energy. The types of non-renewable energy sources that
we use in the UAE include oil, nuclear and coal. Oil comes from the remains of microscopic
plants and animals, nuclear energy comes from the nucleus of an atom and coal comes from the
remains of plants as well (Solar Schools).

Although renewable energy is great for the environment there are still some disadvantages to
using it, for example it can be unreliable because it depends on nature and if there is not enough
sunlight or wind or maybe a there’s drought they would not be able to generate enough
electricity. Another disadvantage to renewable energy is that its really expensive to set up and it
takes up a lot of space. However there are far more advantages like the fact that it will never run
out unlike fossil fuels and that renewable energy is better for our health because they don’t give
off greenhouse gases or pollutants (Conserve Energy Future).

There are also lots of advantages and disadvantages for non-renewable energy, some of the
advantages include that it’s high in energy this is because resources like coal and oil and
provides us with more energy than renewable energy sources like sunlight and wind, another
advantage to non-renewable energy is that they are easy and cheap to use. There is way more
disadvantages though like the amount of time that it takes to acquire them with all the mining
and drilling. Another big disadvantage is the it’s bad for our respiratory systems because some of
the sources give off carbon monoxide (Vedantu).

In my opinion the best option for renewable energy in the UAE is solar energy because we get
lots of sunlight even during winter and that would result in lots of energy. Wind energy wouldn’t
be as effective because we do not get that much wind in the UAE. Hydroelectric energy also
wouldn’t be as effective because there aren’t that many bodies of water in the UAE.
