Lesson
The Concept of Ratio
1

Objective/s

1. Express one value as a fraction of another given their ratio and vice
versa

In this lesson pupils will learn about expressing one value as a fraction
of another given their ratio and vice versa.

Definition of Terms

Fraction ( from Latin fractus, “broken” ) represents a part of a whole or

more generally, any number of equal parts.

Two Main Parts of a Fraction

1. Numerator refers to the number on the top of the line.

- It tells how many equal parts of the whole or collection are taken.

2. Denominator refers to the number below the line.

- It shows the number of the whole is being divided. It functions as
divisor of the numerator.

Ratio is the spoken language of arithmetic. It is a way of comparing two
or more quantities having the same units. The quantities may be separate
entities or may be different parts of a whole.

A ratio can be written in three different ways such as:

word form → a is to b
colon form → a : b
fraction form ( by giving the value of their quotient ) → 𝑎⁄
𝑏

Example.

There are two circles and three triangles in a box. Express the number of
circles to the number of triangles and vice versa.

Solutions:

a. Draw the figures in the given problem like this

b. Express the ratio of the two quantities (circles and triangles) in three
different ways.

 Word form → two circles is to 3 triangles

 Colon form → 2:3
 Fraction form → 2⁄3

Rate is a comparison of two quantities but may have different units of

measures and their ratio has a unit of measure. For example, 60 kilometers to
an hour or 60 kilometers per hour.

2
Illustrative Example 1: Study and Learn

What is 14 out of 56 expressed as a fraction?

Solutions
Step-by-Step:
a. Write 14 as the top number (numerator) of the fraction.
b. Write 56 as the bottom number (denominator) of the fraction.
like this,

𝟏𝟒 Numerator

𝟓𝟔 Denominator

Simplify this fraction by reducing to it’s lowest term.

Simplify the fraction by dividing the top and bottom numbers by their
greatest common factor (GCF) which is 14.
Using a factor tree we find the GCF
14 ÷ 14 = 1 14 56
56 ÷ 14 = 4
2 x 7 2 x 28
therefore:
𝟏𝟒 𝟏
→𝟒 The common factors
2 x 14
𝟓𝟔
of 14,56 are 2 & 7. Then multiply
2 and 7 to get the GCF. 2 x 7

Therefore the GCF is 14

Answer:

14 out of 56 is ¼ as a fraction

Lesson
The Concept of
2 Proportion

Objective/s:

1. Defines and illustrates the meaning of ratio and proportion

concrete or pictorial models.

In this lesson pupils will learn and understand fully the concept on ratio
and proportion using concrete or pictorial models.

Definition of Terms

Ratio is the spoken language of arithmetic. It is a way of comparing two or more

quantities having the same units.

A ratio can be written as a is to b or a : b or by giving the value of

their quotient 𝑎⁄
𝑏
Terms of Ratio

Antecedent refers to the first term of the quantity of the ratio.

Consequent refers to the second quantity of the ratio.

1st term (Antecedent)

𝒂
2nd term (Consequent) 𝒃

11
Study and Learn:

There are two circles and three triangles in a box. Express the number of
circles to the number of triangles and vice versa.

Solutions:
a. Draw the figures in the given problem like this

b. Express the ratio of the two quantities (circles and triangles) in three
different ways.

 Word form → two circles into three triangles is 2 to 3

 Colon form → 2:3
 Fraction form → 2⁄3

Proportion is the statement of equality between two ratios or fractions.

Its part of a proportion is a term. A proportion can be written in two ways:

𝑎 𝑐
as two equal fractions =𝑑
𝑏
or
using a colon a : b = c : d → read as a is to b as c is d

Terms in Proportion

Means refers to the inner numbers of the proportion.

Extremes refers to the outside numbers of the proportion.
means

a:b = c:d

extremes
If in a given proportion a term is missing, it can be solved using cross
multiplication.

Answer: The ratios do not form a proportion

13
Illustrative Example 3. Study and Learn

Fine the missing term and tell whether the two ratios form a proportion.

a. 6 : 9 = 8 : x b. n : 4 = 6 : 8

Solutions:

a. 6 : 9 = 8 : x → Multiply the extremes 6 ∙ x and means = 9 ∙ 8

6 ∙ x = 9 ∙ 8 → Find the product 6x = 72
6x = 72 → Find the value of x by dividing both sides of the equation by 6

𝟔𝐱 𝟕𝟐
= Checking: 6 : 9 = 8 : x → Replace x by 12
𝟔 𝟔
X = 12
6 ∙ 9 = 8 ∙ 12→ Get the product of the
xtremes and means
6 ∙ 12 = 9 ∙ 8

72 = 72 → The two ratios form

a pproportions

b. . n : 4 = 6 : 8 → Multiply the extremes n ∙ 8 and means = 4 ∙ 6

n ∙ 8 = 4 ∙ 6 → Find the product 8n = 24
8n = 24 → Find the value of n by dividing both sides of the equation by 8

𝟖𝐧 𝟐𝟒
= Checking:
𝟖 𝟖
X=3 n : 4 = 6: 8 → Replace n by 3

3 ∙ 4 = 6 ∙ 8 → Get the product of the

extremes and means
3∙8=4∙6

24 = 24 → The two ratios are

proportions
