APPRECIATING THE HEALTH SECTOR

This activity has two main objectives:

 To appreciate the health sector of the Philippines and compare it with different countries; and
 To develop skills on extracting health data from internet sources.

Activity 1

Choose two other countries aside from the Philippines. Ideally, one country should be a developed/industrialized
country (USA, Canada, UK, Japan), another should be a newly industrializing country (Malaysia, South Korea), and of
course our developing country, the Philippines.

 United States of America

 India

Activity 2

Do an internet search. Using search engines like Google or Yahoo, search for Gross National Product, Gross
Domestic Product, and the Per Capita GNP or GDP of the countries you chose. Accomplish the table provided for such.
If you find it difficult to find the Per Capita GNP or GDP, simply divide the GNP or GDP with the total population
of the countries in a certain year.

Accomplish the table that follows:

Table 1: General Economic Resources

Gross National or Domestic
Country Population Per Capita GNP or GDP (US$)
Product
100.311 Billion USD (GNP)
Philippines 112,643,543 GDP per Capita: $8,452
394.09 Billion USD (GDP)
22.99 Trillion USD (GNP)
United States of America 335,008,174 GDP per Capita: $6,461
20.89 Trillion USD (GDP)
3.535 Trillion USD (GNP)
India 1,408,263,510 GDP per Capita: $63,416
3.05 Trillion USD (GDP)

Activity 3

Again, do an internet search. Look at the different countries that you have listed in Table 1. Are the countries’ economic
performances far from one another?

Do an internet search on the following parameters for the countries you listed in Table 1.
1. Total expenditures for health (both private and public health spending). You can look at this index from each
country’s national health account.
 Philippines - 51.4 Billion USD
 USA - 4.1 Trillion USD
 India - 30.1 Billion USD

2. Per capita health spending. This is how much a certain country spends on each citizen for health.
 Philippines - 142 USD
 USA -  11,859 USD
 India - 64 USD

3. Total labor force of each country, then the total number of manpower in the health sector. What is the
proportion of the health manpower to the total labor force?
 Philippines - 44.90 million labor force - 1.8 million manpower in health sector
 USA - 165 million labor force - 22 million manpower in health sector
 India - 471 million labor force - 5.76 million manpower in health sector
4. Search for the total number of hospital beds in each of the countries. Compute the ratio of population per
hospital bed.
 Philippines - 1.2 bed per 1,000 population
 USA - 4.2 beds per 1,000 population.
 India - 0.5 bed per 1000 population

Activity 4
Accomplish the table that follows:
