Important Days
World Tourism Day 2022
▪ World Tourism Day 2022 is observed on 27 September globally to focus on promoting tourism in
various parts of the world.
▪ It was initiated by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in 1979. The first World
Tourism Day was celebrated in 1980
▪ Theme for 2022: ‘Rethinking Tourism’
▪ It is celebrated on 27 September every year because the date marks the Anniversary of the adoption
of the Statutes of UNWTO (Sep 27, 1970)

Awards & Honours


President Draupadi Murmu confers NSS Awards 2020-21 at Rashtrapati Bhawan
▪ President Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Service Scheme NSS Awards for the year 2020-
21 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
▪ A total of forty-two Awards were given for two Universities, ten NSS Units, their Programme Officers,
and 30 NSS Volunteers.
▪ The Department of Youth Affairs of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports confers the National
Service Scheme Award every year.
About NSS (National Services Scheme)
▪ NSS is a Centrally Sector Scheme that was launched in the year 1969 with the primary objective of
developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service.
▪ The motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU ‘

Sports and Games


36th National Games
▪ The 36th National Games, Gujarat 2022 was officially launched at the EKA Arena Trans Stadia.
▪ The National Games will take place from September 29 to October 12.

▪ The Games will be conducted in six cities in Gujarat - Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara,
Rajkot and Bhavnagar. New Delhi will additionally host the track cycling event.
▪ Gujarat is Hosting the event for the First Time.
▪ The Theme for 36th National Games is ‘Celebrating Unity Through Sports’,
▪ Two new events Yogasana and Mallakhamba, and Indigenous games like Kho-Kho and Kabbadi are
also included in the National Games 2022.
▪ The Games were last held in Kerala in 2015. It is being held now after a gap of seven years.
▪ The official mascot for the National Games 2022 is Savaj, the Asiatic lion (Savaj means lion cub in
Gujarati)

Defence Exports Up 334% In Last 5 Years, Now Exporting To 75 Nations: Indian Government
▪ India's defence exports for 2021-22 were estimated at 13,000 crores, the highest ever.
▪ In 2021-22, private sector accounted for 70% of exports while public sector firms Accounted for
rest. Previously, private sector used to account for 90% of India's defence Exports.
▪ India aims to achieve a turnover of $25 billion in defence production with $5 billion of exports by
2025 and various initiatives have been taken in this direction.
Initiatives to Encourage Manufacturing Defence-related items in India
▪ Raising of FDI limit to 74% from 49% (August 2020).
▪ Establishment of Defence Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
▪ Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 to promote Make in India and Atma Nirbhar Bharath in
defence.
▪ Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti to boost IP (Intellectual Property) culture and to promote creation of IP
in defence production sector.
▪ Innovation for Defence Excellence (DEX) initiative etc.
Recent Milestones Achieved by India's Defence Sector
▪ Commissioning of first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant in Kochi.
▪ Indigenous Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-III's squadron commissioned into Indian Coast Guard.
▪ Testing of new generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile 'Agni P’
▪ Philippines signed $374.96-million deal for supply of shore-based anti-ship variant of BrahMos
Supersonic Cruise Missile.

TN Drafts Ordinance to Stop Online Gambling
▪ An Ordinance “prohibiting online gambling” was approved by Tamil Nadu’s Council of Ministers during
a meeting chaired by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in the Secretariat.
▪ However, Governor’s approval towards the Ordinance’s promulgation is pending yet.
Note
▪ Tamil Nadu Government attempts to bring in legislation against online gambling for the second time.
▪ Though legislation banning online gaming was enacted by the TN Assembly in February 2021, the
Madras High Court struck it down.
▪ Justice K. Chandru Committee was constituted on January 9, 2021 to study the impact of online
rummy in the State.
▪ Article 123 deals with power of President to promulgate Ordinances during recess of Parliament.
▪ Article 213 deals with power of Governor to promulgate Ordinances during recess of Legislative
Assembly.

Police Clearance Certificate can now be Applied Online.


▪ Passport applicants will now be able to apply for police clearance certificates (PCCs) at all online
Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) across the country.
▪ The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is the nodal ministry for the issuance of passports.
▪ The PCCs are a pre-requisite for the issuance of passports to the applicants. However, the issuance
of the PCCs by the local police takes time that results in a delay in the grant of passports.
▪ According to the Consular, Passport and Visa Division of the MEA, PCCs are issued to Indian
Passport holders in case they have applied for Residential Status, Employment or Long-term visa or
for immigration”.

▪ India ranks 87th globally out of 199 countries in Henley Passport Index (HPI) in 2nd Quarter for 2022.
▪ The index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and is
corroborated by a research team Henley and Partners.
