64th Magsaysay Awards 2022
▪ The Ramon Magsaysay Award Winners are
✓ Sotheara Chhim, Psychiatrist (Cambodia) who helped fellow Cambodians recover from trauma
resulting from the Khmer Rouge’s genocidal rule
✓ Tadashi Hattori, Opthalmologist (Japan), who led an effort to treat thousands of Vietnamese
villagers.
✓ Bernadette Madrid, Pediatrician (Philippines), a Filipina pediatrician who has provided medical, legal
and social help to thousands of abused children and their families.
✓ Gary Bencheghib, Activist & Filmmaker (Indonesia), a Frenchman who battles plastic pollution in
Indonesian rivers. He was honoured for Emergent Leadership.
Note:
▪ Ramon Magsaysay Awards are named after a Philippine president Ramon Magsaysay who died in
a 1957 plane crash. Every the awards are presented to honour “greatness of spirit in selfless service
to the peoples of Asia.”
▪ Ramon Magsaysay Award is regarded as Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize.
▪ First Awarded in the Year 1958.

Death of Mikhail Gorbachev
▪ Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, died in Moscow at the age of 91
▪ He not only reduced hostilities between the West and erstwhile Soviet Union (USSR), but even brought
an end to the Cold War as the leader
▪ Due to his hard work, he was awarded the title of Laborer at the very early age of 17.
▪ In 1988, India awarded Gorbachev with the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and
Development.
▪ In 1990 he was given the Nobel Peace Prize.

India’s Foreign Policy
External Affairs Minister's visit to Abu Dhabi
▪ External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited the site of the under-construction Hindu temple which
is the First Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi.
▪ He was on a three-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
▪ BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir temple will come up on 55,000 square metres of land. The
structure will be hand-carved by Indian temple artisans and assembled in the UAE. It will be the first
traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East.

India's GDP grows 13.5% in 1st Quarter
▪ India’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the April-June quarter (Q1) of the financial year 2022-23
rose 13.5 per cent, as per provisional estimates released by National Statistical Office (NSO)
▪ This is fastest growth rate compared to the last four quarters.

G20 Environment Ministers' Meeting in Bali


▪ Environment officials from the Group of 20 nations met in Indonesia's island of Bali for talks on
climate action and the global impact of the war in Ukraine, with Indonesia's environment minister
saying the world is already facing a climate crisis.
▪ Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said India is showing intent as a problem solver despite
not being a traditional contributor to global emissions.
▪ India is totally committed to driving its low-carbon industry transitions through a multi-pronged
approach that cuts across sectors and issues
▪ India's National Green Hydrogen Mission promises to be a game-changer for reducing emissions
from hard-to-abate sectors.
