PERFORMATIVE
ARCHITECTURE
Performative architecture is an architecture using
digital technologies to challenge the way the built
environment is designed.

Development of new instruments and methods

contribute to a new understanding of the way
buildings are imagined, constructed and
experienced.

Due to recent developments in technology ,cultural theory and the emergence of

sustainability as a defining
socio economic issue, there is an increasing interest in performance as an
architectural design

Being performative is usually associated with sustainability and complex digital

models analyzing the
structural and environmental behavior of buildings.
ELEMENTS OF PERFORMATIVE ARCHITECTURE

RESPONSIVE DYNAMIC EXOSKELETAL KINETIC

FACADES FACADES STRUCTURE STRUCTURES
RESPONSIVE FACADES

ABSTRACT- RESPONSIVENESS IS A DISTINCTIVE

CHARACTERISTIC THAT CAN OFFER A GREAR
OPPORTUNITY WHEN USED IN BUILDING
FACADES WHILE ADDING RESPONSIVE UNITS
THAT ALLOW OR PREVENT THE DAYLIGHT INTO
THE SPACES OFFERING A CHANCE TO REGULATE
SUN LIGHT TO MINIMIZE ELECTRICAL LIGHT
DEPENDENCY AND BENEFIT FROM NATURAL
RESOURCES.
DYNAMIC
FACADE

THE WAY THE DYNAMIC FAÇADE WORKS IS

THROUGH ELECTRONIC CONTROLS WITHIN
THE BUILDING THAT CAN INDIVIDUALLY
CONTROL EACH OF THE N MOTORS WHIN THE
FAÇADE.
IT IS A SIMPLE TECHNOLOGY WHICH DOES
NOT INCLUDE ANY TYPE OF RESPONSIVE
SYSTEM AND RESOURCES ONLY TO THE USE
INPUT FROM THE BUILDING OCCUPANTS.
EXOSKELETAL
STRUCTURES

EXOSKELETON, AS A VISIBLE PRIMARY

STRUCTURAL ELEMENT OF THE BUILDING,
AFFECTS THE ARRANGEMENT OF FAÇADE:
ITS ADENSITY, SCALE AND CONFIGURATION.

DESIGN OF THE EXOSKELETON REQYURES

CLOSE COLLABORATION BETWEEN
ARCHITECTS AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS
IN ORDR TO ARRANGE THE FAÇADE
PROPERLY.
KINETIC STRUCTURES

KINETIC ARCHITECTURE IS A CONCEPT

THROUGH WHICH BUILDINGS ARE
DESIGNED TO ALLOW PARTS OF THE
STRUCTURE TO MOVE, WITHOUT REDUCING
OVERALL STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY.

BUILDINGS CAPABILITY FOR MOTION CAN BE

USED JUST TO: ENHANCE ITS AESTHETIC
QUALITIES: RESPOND TO ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS: AND OR, PERFORM
FUNCTIONS THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE
FOR A STATIC STRUCTURE.

CLIMATE

⬣ Abu Dhabi Experiences Hot And Humid Climate

⬣ Winter :The Maximum Temperatures Range From
24 °C To 26 °C (76 °F To 80 °FSummer Is Very Hot
And Sunny Temperatures Ranging From 38 °C To 42
°C (101 °F To 108 °F) Between May And September,
⬣ Annual Temperature: 26.8 °C.
⬣ . Highest Temperature: In August, At Around 34.2 °C
⬣ Average Rainfall: 75mm
DESIGN ELEMENTS
Screens
The Design Is Based On The Concept Of Adaptive Flowers And The
Mashrabiya – A Wooden Wooden Lattice Shading System.
Secondary skin filters the light and reduces glare.
Powered by renewable energy derived from photovoltaic panels.
The Dynamic Shading System Is A Screen Comprised Of Triangulate
Units Such As Origami Umbrellas. The Triangular Units Act As
Individual Shading Devices That Unfold To Various Angles In Response
To The Sun’s Movement In Order To Obstruct The Direct Solar
Radiation.
Each Shading Device Comprises A Series Of Stretched
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE POLYTETRA FLUORETHYLENE)
Panels. When The Shading Device Is Closed, Occupants Can Still See
Through From Inside To The Outside
OPERATION

As The Sun Rises In The Moring , The Mashrabiya

Along This Side Of The Building Will Begin To Close,
And When The Sun Moves Around The Building, All
Vertical Strip Mashrabiya Move With The Sun.
At night all screen fold, allowing more of the façade.

PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS
• Roofs facing south each each tower incorporate
photovoltaic cells.
• Generating approximately fice percent of the total energy
required renewable energy sources, used for heating water
and mechanism of façade.

SHADING PERFORMANCE
Based on optimized categorization of solar rays.
1. If solar rays land on the curtain-wall between
00 and 79 degrees. Un-folded configuration–
Require full front cover.
2. 2. If solar rays land on the curtain-wall
between 80 and 83 degrees. Mix-folded
configuration-Require partial front cover.
(Partial views).
3. 3. If solar rays land on the curtain-wall
greater than 83 degrees. Fully-folded
configuration-No front cover, Maximum
unobstructed views.
RELATIONSHIP OF
LOCATION/CLIMATE TO THE
TYPE OF KINETIC DESIGN :
• As the climate of the region is hot comparatively the kinetic design of the
building helps to overcome
and maintain buildings indoor environment with a façade operation mechanism.
• It Can adapt to diurnal fluctuations in temperature.
• Provide appropriate daylight levels by using light-deflection techniques in
intelligent kinetic façades to
improve indoor lighting.
BENEFITS

1. 50% energy savings-office spaces alone, & up to 20% for the building overall.
2. 2. 20% reduction in carbon emission with up to 50% for office spaces use
alone(reduction in AC &
lighting usage).
3. 3. 15% reduction in overall plant size and capital cost.
4. 4. 20% reduction in materials and overall weight due to the highly fluid,
rational and optimized
Design.
5. 5. Better naturally lit spaces through better admission of natural diffused
light.
6. 6. Better visibility of external natural views, less use of obstructive and
psychologically trapping
Blinds.(decreased glare)
