Some people think that certain old buildings are more worth preserving than

the other ones. Which types of old buildings should be preserved? Do you think
that the advantages of preserving these old buildings outweigh the
disadvantages? (Ad outweigh Disad)
It is true that a number of ancient constructions are more worthwhile to be better kept than
others. Despite some obvious drawbacks of this trend, I would argue that these are
outweighed by the benefits.
Several types of old buildings that are of archaeological, aesthetic, or architectural significances
deserve to be well kept for their rich historical value and cultural meaning. An important part of
what gives a city character and a sense of community is its history. One way of acknowledging
this history is by preserving historic constructions and structures. They may be an example of a
particular style of architecture, or represent a significant era, or a milestone in the city’s history.
For instance, recognizing the importance of ancient buildings to the public and to the country’s
heritage, Congress enacted the National Historic Preservation Act. This act works to save
historic buildings maintained and enriched for future generations of Vietnam.
On the one hand, there are two major negative features when conserving these old
constructions. Firstly, the high expenditure associated with protection. The spending is in terms
of the need for materials and specialized skills. Nowadays, the cost of materials is very high
leading to increasing taxpayers' burden. Secondly, hindering development. The opportunity
cost of preserving cultural resources is development. The place where the historical, cultural
resources are located can serve as an ideal place for other businesses. If any business is set-up
at that locations then it will create employment opportunities for the people of that area.
On the other hand, I believe that the positive features are more considerable. One reason for
this view is that generating revenue. The cultural resources catch the attention of tourists.
Tourists have to pay a price in order to have a look at the preserved cultural resources which
leads to foreign currency earnings. Another reason is that creating cultural awareness. The
youngsters need traditional education as this will tell them of their true identity. Cultural
heritage is the collective memory of nations. There will not be conflicts between elders and the
youngsters regarding cultural values and tradition once the younger generation is well aware of
their culture.
In conclusion, it seems to me that the advantages of this maintaining are more significant
than the disadvantages.
