Geotechnical Investigation work for water supply scheme for RWSS

07.INTRODUCTION:
To perform properly, a structure must interact favorably with the soil on which it rests.
A foundation is that part of the structure that supports the weight of the structure and transmits
the load to underlying soil or rock. In general, foundation engineering applies the knowledge
of geology, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and structural engineering to the design and
construction of foundations for buildings and other structures. Geotechnical investigation
plays a vital role in foundation engineering. In order to ascertain the properties of the
underlying soil, economically design and safety of structures, proper sub soil exploration must
be carried out For the construction Geotechnical Investigation work for water supply
scheme for RWSS.the geotechnical investigation works on this site was handed over to M/s
SUBUDHI TECHNO ENGINEERS PVT.LTD. Plot No -327/2702 ,Omfed Back side
Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar, khurda-751017.

After getting this order, M/s Subudhi Techno engineers pvt. Ltd. had mobilized his resources to
complete this job.

08. METHODOLOGY OF INVESTIGATION:

The soil exploration is very much important in the field of civil engineering for
providing safe and economic design and execution of engineering work. Exploration should be
carried out to a depth up to which the increase in pressure due to structural loading is likely to
cause perceptible settlement or shear failure.

There are various methods of soil exploration out of which rotary boring is the common
method adopted all over India. It is a very fast method of advancing hole in both rock and soil.
A drill bit fixed to the lower end of drill rods which rotate by a suitable chuck and is always
kept in firm contact with the bottom of the hole.

09. SAMPLE COLLECTION AND FIELD TEST :

1.0 DISTRUBED SAMPLE - (DS)

Disturbed samples were collected from bore hole during exploration. The samples
were collected in a polythene bag and sealed so as to loss of moisture. After conducting
standard penetration test, disturbed soil samples were collected and these soils are tested to
determine grain size analysis, water content, index properties and swelling percentage.

Geotechnical Investigation work for water supply scheme for RWSS

2.0 UNDISTRUBED SAMPLE - (UDS)

Undisturbed soil samples are collected with the help of a cylindrical sampling tube of
100mm diameter and 450mm length as per IS 2132. These samples are collected at an interval
of 1.50m each or at change of strata and as per specifications provided by the client. After
collection of samples, both ends of the tube are closed by wax so as to prevent loss of
moisture. These samples are meant for determining shear parameters along with other
parameter of the soil.
3.0 FIELD TEST- STANDARD PENETRATION TEST (SPT)
The test was performed as per IS-2131:1963 in clean hole 55mm to 150mm in
diameter. The thick wall split-tube sampler 50.8mm (2inch) OD and 35mm (1.5inch) ID was
driven in to the soil at the bottom of the hole under the blows of a 63.5Kg drive weight with
75cm free fall. The sampler was first driven through 15cm as a sitting drive and it was further
driven through 30cm. The number of blows required to drive the sampler 30cm beyond the
seating drive is turned as the penetration resistance `N’. The observed value of `N’ is then
corrected for over-burden presence correction and submergence correction as per guidelines
provided in the IS code. The N-values are indication of the density of cohesionless soils and
the consistency of cohesive soil.
LABORATORY TESTING :
After completion of in-situ tests, the samples were transported to laboratory to determine
physical and engineering properties of soils for the analysis and design of various foundation
elements. The laboratory tests were carried out as per requirement of the type of structure and site
conditions. The list of various laboratory tests required with respect to information to be obtained is as
under:

LABORATORY TESTS:
The laboratory – tests were conducted on selected SPT / disturbed / undisturbed
soil samples collected from the bore holes drilled at the proposed site. The tests include grain
size analysis, natural moisture content, D.F.S specific Gravity, liquid limit, plastic limit,
plasticity index test and shear test. Particles size distribution tests on representative soil sample
were also carried out. The laboratory test confirming to the requirement of I.S and specification
were conducted on the soil, sample. The results of all these tests are given in test result sheet
separately.

1. GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS :

The grain size analysis of different soil samples were done as per the requirement of IS: 2720(Pt-
IV) 1975 – method of test for soil, Grain size analysis. The details of the test results are shown test
result sheet separately in tabular as well as graphically. The results of grain size analysis are used
to classify the soil in various depths of bore holes.

2. NATURAL MOISTURE CONTENT

The natural moisture content were determined as per IS: 2720(Pt –II) – 1973 – Method of test for
soil, determination of water content.
3. DETERMINATION OF BULK DENSITY :

The Bulk densities were determined in the laboratory from the UDS samples at different levels and
the result are shown separately in tabular form.
4. DETERMINATION OF DRY DENSITY :

The dry density of the UDS/DS samples was determined at the known moisture content and bulk
density.
5. DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY :

The specific gravity of the UDS/DS sample were determined at different levels and the results are
shown separately.
6. DETERMINATION OF VOID RATIO :

The void ratios of the UDS/DS samples were determined at different levels and the results are
shown separately.

7. LIQUID LIMIT & PLASTIC LIMIT : [AS PER IS : 2720 Pt – IV] :

The liquid and plastic limit of soils were other index properties of soil have also been determined
as per the relevant IS code of practice. The liquid and plastic limits of soil samples have been
determined in the laboratory and results are shown separately

8. :DETERMINATION OF SHEAR PARAMETERS

Un consolidated and un drained Tri-axial shear tests were carried out from soil samples collected
as per IS : 2720 Pt – IX 1971 with three different cell pressures of 1,2,3kg/sq.cm using Tri – axial
shear testing machine and result are shown separately in tabular and graphical manner.

10 DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:
Laboratory test results are likely to be more dependable than the field results in case of soft
rock ,hard rock ,weathered rock and sand stone. the are sample collected from different depths and
results are furnished depth wise in rock test summary.

11. FOUNDATION OPTIONS - TYPE AND DEPTH OF FOUNDATION IN SOIL

A foundation must have an adequate depth from considerations of adverse environmental
influences. It must also be economically feasible in terms of overall structure. Depth of foundations in
soil shall be decided as per clause 7 of IS: 1904 for special cases like; where volume change is
expected / scour is expected / foundations on sloping ground / foundation on made or filled up ground
frost action is expected etc.
