OBJECTIVE/S: Evaluate own limitations and the possibilities for their transcendence
TOPIC TITLE: Human Person’s Limitations and Possibilities For Their
Transcendence
LESSON PROPER:
A human person is not just a being with limitations. From a serious reflection of
his life in the world, he/she is clearly a limited being. In this light, the meaning of
transcendence will take a new turn, where the human person will turn inward and
search the depths of his/her being in order to give meaning to the absurdity that every
external experience offers as insight of what it really means to exist as a human
being, especially in his interactions with other beings in the world that he/she tries to
create and recreate.
The human person must recognize that one’s human body imposes certain
limitation and possibilities. According to Dr. Mariano Ariola, there are eight (8)
concepts of these limitations and possibilities:
1. Dread. According to the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard to “dread” is to describe
the general apprehension and anxiety in human life. He believed that dread is built
into us as a means for God to call us to make a commitment to a moral and
spiritual way of life despite the void of meaninglessness before us.
2. Beings-Others-Related. He/she has to establish relationships with others – in the
world but does not mean he/she has to depend from others to realize his/her
existence or resign his freedom and possibilities.
3. Concern. Human existence is always an existence of relationships. It is an
encounter.
4. Guilt-Feeling. Refers to something that is missing or lacking in a person.
5. Conscience. It enables human person to find himself/herself again, because it is a
voice, a voice calling man (dasein) to own himself/herself as a self.
6. Resoluteness. Man’s readiness to be called by conscience.
7. Temporality. The human person’s life is temporal. It is the present moment that is
very crucial in making one’s life meaningful.
8. Death. Death is always a possibility that surely will happen. The human person has
to anticipate it by accepting it as a dread.
Following the discussion, we can say that my body is mine alone, for I am my body.
It is because of my body that I have a world, and I am related to anything and
anybody else. Transcendence would mean that, I am more than my body because I
am also personality, temperament, will, spirit, creativity, and dignity. The physical
activities and attributes that are made real through my body, reveal the person that I
am. We develop our bodies through improvement of human skills and grow in our
faith and spirituality.
